1346 GMT: Russia has again increased the price of gas sold to Ukraine. Gas is now 80% more expensive than it was this past winter.


Prime Minister Arseny Yatseniuk said the latest move, two weeks after Moscow annexed Ukraine’s Crimea region, was unacceptable and warned that he expected Russia to increase pressure on Kiev by limiting supply to his country.

“There is no reason why Russia would raise the gas price for Ukraine … other than one – politics,” Yatseniuk told Reuters in an interview in the Ukrainian capital Kiev.

“We expect Russia to go further in terms of pressure on the gas front, including limiting gas supplies to Ukraine.”

While Ukraine seems like it may fight the decision in the international courts, this is another example of how Ukraine’s dependence on Russia will be a hard habit to break, as Ukraine still depends on Russia for about 50% of its gas imports.

I know some things along those lines have happened, I just don't know which act in particular you claim is "economic coercion". You have used words "punishment" and now "retaliation" but the key words are "economic coercion".

And you still haven't defined what it means - I take it, it is because you don't know. It's a quite narrow concept AFAICT - I think it is limited to cutting off a vital resource for no reason. For example, if Russia said, we will cut off your gas and oil unless you give us Crimea - that would be economic coercion. Sanctions are another form of economic coercion - so what the "West" is currently doing to Russia, that may very well fall under "economic coercion". I just don't know exactly what the words mean :).

But "we will cease granting you favorable trade tariffs if you join EU because it would harm our domestic industries", that to me clearly is not. Even if the result is economically damaging to the other side.


We do have Nuland confessing to spend $5 billion on "democracy" in Ukraine. There is plenty of evidence of various government-funded NGOs being involved in the process. Maybe you will itemize how all that money was spent? Writing a syllabus for a course on civic virtues?

Some of the support and interference was, however, incontrovertible. When the radicals among the protesters were throwing molotov cocktails and bricks at police, the EU and US were warning Yanukovych and Ukraine of sanctions and other punishment if the government tried to restore order. Then you had US/EU politicians going on stage and encouraging the protesters to instigate regime change. These acts are enough to violate the Budapest Memorandum.

Now if you want to get onto level of "proof", you cannot prove a single person in Crimea involved in Crimea's bid for independence was a Russian soldier, can you?


The basing agreement allowed Russia forces to leave the base, though I don't know the exact circumstances. But the constitutional president of Ukraine asked for Russian military help to maintain order - that's enough to allow them off the base under the agreements, I would think, I can't say for sure as I don't have the agreements in front of me :).

But I think that this will actually end up in the courts if Ukraine has a case - since the junta government has threatened to sue to get Crimea back. At that point, we can see how strong their arguments are!

Hard as it may be to believe, thinking that Russia behaved properly with Crimea does not mean anyone is towing anyone else's line. I've stated before, even if technically there were some violations of law in Crimea's return to Russia, in the end, I don't see any evil in it - indeed I see a lot of good in it. Crimea is Russia. It was part of a historical "catastrophe", as Putin put it, now it is corrected.

You might feel the same way if by decree of a Communist dictator who took power in US by force, Texas was transferred to Mexico and Texans were clammering to come back. And then some US president found a peaceful way, without any deaths or even injuries and without even threatening war against Mexico, to take Texas back, with support of 90% of Texans (maybe some of the Mexicans favored staying in Mexico). You would probably worship the US president as a hero! :).

Better hope not, or war starts this weekend.
