Doctors in Stockholm are checking a patient suspected of having contracted the Ebola virus.

The patient is understood to be at least the fifth case investigated in Sweden since the virus started spreading rapidly in Africa earlier this year.

They have been been transferred to the infectious diseases clinic at Karolinska University Hospital in Huddinge, according to news agency TT.

"Despite the fact that there were very low suspicions, we decided to take the test. We will get the answer within a day," Åke Örtqvist, spokesperson for doctors dealing with infectious diseases in the Stockholm region.

Did I just read that they are barring Nigeria? I might have read it the wrong way. If this is so, why are Nigerians being admitted to the Hajj.
 Quoting: Aspamce

No, you read it correctly - they are barring Nigerians as well as all others from the affected countries in W.Africa.

but Not Saudi... No, no, no. The Hajj is too lucrative. There are an estimated 70~80 thousand hajjis from Nigeria alone, and that is a lot of money to refuse.

Besides, everyone knows that Saudi throws the best radicalization parties in the entire world. Who would want to miss that, even with the threat of some annoying little disease?!?

Scientists grapple with ethics in rush to release Ebola vaccines

Published September 29, 2014
Reuters
[link to www.foxnews.com]

Normally it takes years to prove a new vaccine is both safe and effective before it can be used in the field. But with hundreds of people dying a day in the worst ever outbreak of Ebola, there is no time to wait.

In an effort to save lives, health authorities are determined to roll out potential vaccines within months, dispensing with some of the usual testing, and raising unprecedented ethical and practical questions.

Air France flies to Ebola-hit Guinea out of solidarity: Hollande

SEP 30, 2014
[link to www.japantimes.co.jp]

PARIS – Air France is maintaining its flights to Ebola-hit Guinea as a sign of France’s “solidarity,” President Francois Hollande said Monday as he hosted a visit by Guinea’s President Alpha Conde.

International help needed to be ramped up for Guinea and other West African nations struggling with the deadly epidemic, which has killed more than 3,000 people since the start of the year, the French leader said.

At the same time, those countries suffering “should not be isolated and should remain open,” he said.

“That is why Air France continues to work” by maintaining flights to Guinea’s capital Conakry, Hollande said.

Air France, however, in August suspended its services to neighboring Sierra Leone, which is also beset by the virus.

Ebola treatment with ZMapp cocktail expected in 2015

'We're moving heaven and earth to scale up manufacturing,' CEO says

[link to www.cbc.ca]

A Toronto-based company that is commercializing the experimental ZMapp treatment for people infected with the Ebola virus in West Africa hopes to scale up manufacturing to produce tens of thousands of doses next year.

Jeffrey Turner, president and CEO of Defyrus, discussed the Ebola outbreak and ZMapp’s potential role on Monday during a web seminar as part of National Biotech Week.

ZMapp is a blend of three monoclonal antibodies — chemicals that block the Ebola virus from invading a cell. Monoclonal antibodies are engineered in a lab to mimic how our immune systems naturally respond.

"Initially, the concept was we needed couple of hundred courses of therapy. Clearly we need more than that," Turner said.

Tens of thousands of doses are likely needed.

"Is it going to happen next year? Probably. We're moving heaven and earth to scale up manufacturing and produce those types of numbers in 2015."

Comment: There is no proof that it even works.

Readying for Ebola: How U.S. Hospitals Are Gearing Up

SEP 29, 2014 01:45 PM ET // BY ERIC NIILER
[link to news.discovery.com]

Federal health-care officials, hospital administrators and emergency-care doctors are preparing for the first cases of Ebola here in the United States. Experts say it's not a question of if, but rather when it will happen.

The good news is that the public health infrastructure in the United States -- from the epidemiologists at the Centers for Disease Control to the weekend physician at the local doc-in-a-box -- has been mobilized for this very eventuality. Many hospitals, even those in many rural areas, are prepared with virus-proof protective gear and isolation units for sick patients.

The bad news is that the disease continues to grow unabated in West Africa, and that containing the spread is getting tougher every day.

"We will see cases," said Alessandro Vespignani, a physics professor at Northeastern University who has developed a biological model of the worldwide spread of Ebola based on current infection rates, population trends and air traffic from the affected zone. "The good news from our modeling is the size of the outbreak is very limited. Even in the worse case, the size of the outbreak in the United States is just two or three individuals."

I was in a pediatricians office today and there were signs posted on the walls stating: "Please notify the desk Immedicately if your child has traveled to any of the following countries in West Africa within the past 21 days: Liberia, Sierra Leone, Guinea." A little unnerving to say the least. I took a pic on my phone but don't know how to upload to here. I guess I'm not fully a GLP tard yet. lol

Oh, and I am just outside of Houston. Two networks had the possible Ebola story on the 10:00 news.

CDC POSTS EBOLA GUIDELINES FOR EMS

09/29/2014
By Mary Jane Dittmar
[link to www.fireengineering.com]

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has posted Interim Guidance for Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Systems and 9-1-1 Public Safety Answering Points (PSAPs) for Management of Patients with Known or Suspected Ebola Virus Disease in the United States.

The information is for managers of 9-1-1 Public Safety Answering Points (PSAPs), emergency medical service (EMS) agencies, EMS systems, law enforcement agencies, fire service agencies, and individual EMS providers (including emergency medical technicians (EMTs), paramedics, and any other medical first responders. EMS responders are offered guidance in handling inquiries, responding to patients with suspected Ebola symptoms, and keeping workers safe.

[snip]

Updates will be posted as needed on the [link to www.cdc.gov] The information contained in this document is intended to complement existing guidance for healthcare personnel, Infection Prevention and Control Recommendations for Hospitalized Patients with Known or Suspected Ebola Hemorrhagic Fever in U.S. Hospitals

The current Ebola outbreak in West Africa has increased the possibility of patients with Ebola traveling from the affected countries to the United States.1 Ebola is an often-fatal disease; be careful when coming in direct contact with a recent traveler from a country with an Ebola outbreak who has symptoms of Ebola. Consider Ebola in anyone with fever who has traveled to, or lived in, an area where Ebola is present. 2 The incubation period for Ebola, from exposure to the appearance of signs or symptoms, ranges from 2 to 21 days (most commonly 8-10 days). Consider any Ebola patient with signs or symptoms infectious. Ebola patients without symptoms are not contagious. To prevent Ebola, avoid exposure to blood or body fluids of infected patients through contact with skin; mucous membranes of the eyes, nose, or mouth; or injuries with contaminated needles or other sharp objects.

Emergency medical services (EMS) personnel and other emergency services staff have a vital role in responding to requests for help, triaging patients, and providing emergency treatment to patients. Unlike patient care in the controlled environment of a hospital or other fixed medical facility, EMS patient care before getting to a hospital is provided in an uncontrolled environment. This setting is often confined to a very small space and frequently requires rapid medical decision-making and interventions with limited information. EMS personnel are frequently unable to determine the patient history before having to administer emergency care.

[snip]

. If the patient has symptoms of Ebola, ask the patient about risk factors within the past three weeks before the onset of symptoms. {and you will get an honest answer what percentage of the time?}
- Based on the presence of symptoms and risk factors, put on or continue to wear appropriate PPE and follow the scene safety guidelines for suspected case of Ebola.
- If there are no risk factors, proceed with normal EMS care.

[snip]

Infection Control

You can safely manage a patient with suspected or confirmed Ebola by following recommended isolation and infection-control procedures, including standard, contact, and droplet precautions. Pay particular attention to protecting mucous membranes of the eyes, nose, and mouth from splashes of infectious material or self-inoculation from soiled gloves.

[snip]

During prehospital resuscitation procedures (intubation, open suctioning of airways, cardiopulmonary resuscitation), do the following:

- In addition to donning the recommended PPE, add respiratory protection that is at least as protective as a National Institute for Occupational and Safety Health (NIOSH) Administration -certified fit-tested N95 filtering face piece respirator or higher instead of a face mask.
- Consider additional PPE

Ebola: Bleeding Less Common but More Deadly

By Lindsey Dow
September 29, 2014.
[link to guardian.com]

Although bleeding is generally considered one of the most tell-tale signs of Ebola, recent data collected on patients in West Africa suggest that bleeding is less common but more deadly, at least with the strain in West Africa. The report, published by the New England Journal of Medicine, contains data on 1,415 Ebola patients from Liberia, Sierra Leone, Guinea and Nigeria, with an onset of symptoms as recent as August 17.

[snip]

Among the symptoms, bleeding amongst patients was less common than previously reported outbreaks, but seemingly increases the risk of death from Ebola. Before the current outbreak in West Africa, approximately 50 percent of those infected with Ebola reportedly experienced unexplained bleeding of some sort. As a result, when the mysterious disease going around in West Africa was finally discovered to be Ebola, locals were told to watch out for a number of symptoms, but most notably bleeding. However, since bleeding is less common in patients in West Africa affected by the Ebola outbreak, many did not feel a need to seek treatment.

This contributed to the spread of Ebola that has now become an epidemic in West Africa. Only 18 percent of Ebola patients sampled in the West Africa outbreak experienced unexplained bleeding. About 83 percent of those who did died compared to the 71 percent of patients who did not experience unexplained bleeding who did not survive. In addition, 20 percent of the sampled Ebola patients who died suffered from unexplained bleeding, compared to approximately 12 percent of patients who recovered from the disease.

The risk of death is especially prevalent in Ebola patients who experience blood in their urine and bleed from areas such as the gums, injection site, nose and underneath the skin. While only 1 percent of patients experienced blood in their urine, 90 percent died. The death rate is similar for those who bleed from their gums, injection site and nose. Only 2 percent of patients sampled experienced bleeding from the gums, but 95 percent of them died. The same is true for those who experienced bleeding at the injection site. Only 2 percent of the patients experienced bleeding from the nose, but 94 percent died. Bleeding underneath the skin, while one of the most well-known symptoms, in part due to the countless photos published of Ebola patients who experience this, was the least common symptom of all. Less than 1 percent of the Ebola patients sampled experienced bleeding underneath the skin, but all who did died.

Overall, the data suggests that bleeding, while apparently less common in West Africa than previous outbreaks, increases the risk of death from Ebola by a minimum of 10 percent. While only one in six Ebola patients in West Africa will experience unexplained bleeding, more than eight out of 10 patients who suffer from it will die. This is compared to approximately seven out of 10 patients who do not. The data suggests that Ebola patients in West Africa that experience unexplained bleeding appear to have a worse prognosis than those who do not. It also suggests that while unexplained bleeding is a symptom of Ebola, it is not the most common one among patients in West Africa, and thus is not the only sign to watch out for.

Ebola case suspected at Dallas hospital; patient put in isolation

By Associated Press

[link to www.cleveland.com]

DALLAS -- A patient in a Dallas hospital is showing signs of the Ebola virus and is being kept in strict isolation with test results pending, hospital officials said Monday.

Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Dallas said in a statement Monday that the patient's symptoms and recent travel indicated a case of Ebola, the virus that has killed more than 3,000 people across West Africa and infected a handful of Americans who have traveled to that region.

Preliminary test results from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention are expected to come back Tuesday.

Hospital spokeswoman Candace White would not answer any questions about the patient or where the patient had visited.

North Texas Hospital Evaluating Patient For Potential Ebola Exposure

September 29, 2014 9:06 PM
[link to dfw.cbslocal.com]

DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) – A North Texas hospital has a patient in isolation as they evaluate them for potential exposure to the Ebola virus.
Officials with Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital in Dallas released the following statement Monday night:

“Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Dallas has admitted a patient into strict isolation to be evaluated for potential Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) based on the patient’s symptoms and recent travel history. The hospital is following all Centers for Disease Control and Texas Department of Heath recommendations to ensure the safety of patients, hospital staff, volunteers, physicians and visitors. The CDC anticipates preliminary results tomorrow.”

It is unclear what specific symptoms the patient has or what the patient’s travel history was.

CBS 11 News spoke with Dallas County Health and Human Services Director Zachary Thompson who confirmed the patient had been in an area where the Ebola virus exists. “Looking at the travel history is the first indicator and then the next step is [treatment or non-treatment] once we get lab results,” he said.

Thompson definitely felt that there should be a heightened sense of awareness in North Texas, based on what has happened internationally. “With what we’ve seen in the media and how deadly the Ebola virus is, it is a concern.”

Thompson stressed that there are certain procedures that will be followed if tests for the ptient come back positive. “We [health professionals] all had been planning to look at what our next steps are if there is a confirmed case.

Again, we have to do the public health follow up, to see what contacts… where this individual has gone since they arrived here in Dallas. There are a number of things that have to be looked at.”

As far as possible infection to others here in North Texas Thompson said, “The key point is, if there’s been no transmission, blood, secretion, any type of bodily fluids by the infected person to someone else, then that risk is low to none.”

"As part of its ongoing effort to stop the spread of Ebola in Liberia, international Christian relief organization Samaritan’s Purse is airlifting up to 100 tons of protective equipment and supplies this Wednesday from Charlotte.

Because of the rapidly growing numbers of people contracting Ebola in Liberia, medical facilities cannot keep up with the demand and often do not have room for additional patients."

Comment: 100 tons is 200,000 lbs. of PPE. Assuming each ensemble is 10 lb., there's 20,000 isolation suits in that shipment alone.

And this is just one aid agency...
 Quoting: Cheyenne

The PPE they're wearing only weighs about 3.5 lbs per full suit. So that's 60,000 suits in a single shipment, by a single aid group.
And they're still yelling that it's nowhere near enough...

Any Questions?

Amateurs think tactics;
Professionals think logistics;
and the seasoned operator has mastered them both...

I can imagine hospitals soon being jammed up - anyone who has symptoms similar to Ebola would kick off a containment procedure.

In the past three years, I've had symptoms that could have been construed as from Ebola a few times. What would happen if I showed up at the emergency room today with those symptoms?

Yes, I got better, thanks.

82% of Ebola patients are being turned away from hospitals to die at home, spreading infections to family members

"A lack of available hospital beds in Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea, the three countries at the epicenter of the worst Ebola outbreak in history, is leaving many families with nowhere to take their sick and dying. More than 80 percent of Ebola patients, in fact, are being turned away from hospitals and sent back home, where they continue to spread the disease to family members, friends and others in the community."

 Quoting: Cheyenne

Take base number of beds, X 5 for number that could be hospitalized, THAT WOULD GO......

Take this new number (X5) and X 2-3 again, for all of those that would not even think of going to a hospital.

The numbers from the grave diggers were purposely dropped into the public eye so they can say 'see, we didn't know'.

They know damn well the total infections has exceeded the 100,000 mark, 2 weeks ago.

Crossing ROI of 4 as I type (average), will hit 5 quickly, hitting 6 late October........

So potential of 1 million infected by Halloween.

Satan will be delighted. Timing, it is everything.
 Quoting: HnryBwmn///KD0WSJ

That is a good point. The actual infected rate could be 10X - 15X what is reported. Very bad news, indeed. That would put the infected from 62K to 93K - with last week's numbers. The monthly multiplier has to be between 2.8 and 3.2 then, going back to the index case in December.
 Quoting: Cheyenne

While ROI = 2.57; and median case length is 18.5 days, then
(30/18.5)*2.57= Monthly_Growth_Factor = 4.17

Think again.

Supplies here are going to vanish quickly.

Get it now or plan to do without.
 Quoting: HnryBwmn///KD0WSJ

Supplies are already thinning out. They will be gone quickly, because usage in an outbreak environment is 10X ~ 20X "normal"... i.e. well above what the supply chain can handle for sustained demand. Even a brief peak at 20X will tap the standing supplies dry, like what happened with ammo last December & January.

CDC issues Ebola guidelines for U.S. funeral homes

CBS46 News has confirmed the Centers for Disease Control has issued guidelines to U.S. funeral homes on how to handle the remains of Ebola patients. If the outbreak of the potentially deadly virus is in West Africa, why are funeral homes in America being given guidelines?

[link to www.premiumtimesng.com (secure)]

Ten Nigerians in Saudi Arabia to perform the Islamic hajj rites have been confirmed dead, the Coordinator of the National Hajj Commission in Mecca, Aliyu Tanko, said on Monday.

Mr. Tanko said at least 50,000 Nigerian pilgrims have so far arrived Mecca with virtually all them having performed the Umrah rites.

Comment: No details on cause of death. Just a bunch of blathering on about airport checks, and ebola can't get in.
