No. If missiles were launched from Russia or somewhere else far away like that the military would detect it and the President would be notified, but there simply wouldn't be enough time to do anything about it but get a counterstrike launched before it is too late. At best there might be an emergency alert broadcast on radio and TV advising people to take shelter a few minutes before the missiles hit.

If the missiles were launched from a containership cruising along the coastline, I doubt the communication about it would even get out of the Pentagon to the president before it hit.

With the border and ports as ridiculously open as they are though, I would assume that the nukes are already here. Any warning would be the flash of light and sound of a very a big bang on the horizon of a neighboring city.

It's all about the unpreparedness of the average person living with modern technology and a dependency on electricity, services and goods being delivered on a daily basis. In the book they only have 3 nukes going off above the atmosphere causing a EMP blast strong enough to take out all of the electronics in the country. Including Canada i'd imagine, despite not being mentioned in the book, EMP isn't exactly selective and we are close geographically with shared power lines. This book convinced me i'd much rather be nuked directly or nearby than EMP, however, we'd be just as unprepared from direct nuke attacks.

You would receive a 28 minute warning if it came from Russia to the west coast, the east would have more warning.

They won't be travelling in a straight line. The Icbm's would have to travel up first and then back down. Probably more like 40 minutes flight time. Some of the electronics in the soviet and russian arsenal aren't updated so there will be a failure rate. These things have to survive all sorts of forces in flight and re-entry. Plus they have to perform certain important maneuvers. Then the rest of the guidance and electronics have to be spot on for them to make it to the target and detonate above the city.

I would be most concerned about where the president is and would he even retaliate? Could he be reached about the incoming soviet missiles? Think about how he could not be found when the benghazi situation unfolded. If he couldn't be found then there would be no retalitory strike. What a mess. I feel as if Obama would not retaliate.

Too many subs with nuclear missiles for an effective warning. Question becomes what are the most important targets. About the only thing you can do unless you have a bomb shelter is hide in the basement if you have one or access to one. I believe most of the old fallout shelters are gone.

if you had a warning...you would have minutes if that...from inside russia proper an icbm launch to reach us is about 32 minutes give or take...a sub launch off the coast...maybe five minutes warning if that. better off not even knowing its coming to be honest. just hope you're in a blast zone that way it's quick and you won't die a slow painful death from radiation
