I have a Mexican contractor living on my block that does roofing and is crazier than a loon. One day he's pleasant and the next day he's a real asshole. His son was doing some work clearing brush for me and I got into a discussion with him about his dad. He said he was different before he started roofing, he was always nice and never had anything bad about the way he acted until he started doing roofing. The young man told me his pop had fallen from roofs 3 times because he was overcome by the asphalt fumes and heat. He told me he was afraid he might kill someone some day because he was even worst than what we had seen of him.

It is also worth mentioning he has two children that have mental disabilities, and IMO since it is the two that were born after he took up roofing as an occupation that it is possible the retardation is a result of genetic damage caused by the chemicals that effected the dad.

It seems plausible the toxic materials and stressful working conditions may be a factor in the aggressive and unusual behavior of roofers. I don't know, but I do know this, when I did my own shop roof I barely made it through it because it made me sick as a dog, but then it was over 100 degrees. That's the best time to do it because the shingles lay flat and seal well on the tarpaper.

That's very impressive, but there's nothing admirable about working 70-80 hours a week. I worked 1,000 hours a week bare-knuckle-boxing skunk ape and it was god awful.
