YOU'RE DOING IT WRONG....

This is what happens when you put a cell phone OS on a computer. Apparently MS is now too lazy to actually create two systems at the same time.

This is already the case with Android, essentially. Try deleting a file from within Android itself, if you can even get that far. Betcha that file is still there somewhere if you explore the directories of the phone on an actual pc.

I love my phone for what it does, but what it tries to prevent you from doing is very concerning.

I just don't get why the phone/tablet/pc have now all merged as one. Do we really need three of the same thing, just different sizes?

A phone is.... a phone.

A pc is an entirely different thing with its own purpose.

I can't believe they are marketing themselves out of proper PCs, and making them all touch tablet things. They're just effectively massive phones, but totally dumbed down. WHY!?

I am sure the coders aren't using tablet pcs, so what happens when they need to update to the times - will AMD/Intel only be manufacturing bespoke industrial grade proper pc components like the old days?

You will run applications that will work with files, those files will not be stored locally, they'll be stored in the cloud. You will pay a subscription to access your files, and of course, you will have no reasonable expectation of privacy in your files because you have transmitted them to a third party. You are seeing this forced 3rd party storage in segments of markets that have monopolized by certain corps.

Ultimately this will likely be mandated by law, the private storage of information will be too dangerous.

And if you are looking for really easy, can I interest you in death? There are no troubles when you are dead.

So basically, Microsoft thinks it can out-Apple Apple and out-Java Java. But there's a reason Apple doesn't do PC's volume and a reason Java isn't used for serious programs.

Thanks for the info OP. Back when Vista came out i bought it day one then returned it the very next day. Sucks to be in them shoes!!!

I bought a new laptop with win8. After updating to 8.1 it ran ok for 2 days and then I lost all internet and also access to sound card. Said it was not installed. I am having it all formatted and will try win7 till something better. Long live XP!!! 8.1 is total rubbish.

I work in IT. I still use Windows XP as my preferred O/S and will go on doing so for as long as I can install it.

Windows 8 or 8.1 still has the same old O/S (Win7) under the hood. In fact it does work very well on a touch screen device with the exception that they haven't got the on-screen keyboard function / interaction quite right yet.

Microsoft have attempted to turn windows into a proprietary O/S like Apple and Android tablet O/S's. The Microsoft Apps pre-installed. These can be removed with much effort and technical knowledge. Account creation can be done using the command line, negating the need to create an on-line account.

Modern tablet O/S's are a cancerous locked-in glory-hole spyware. What's worse Linux versions will go the same way in an attempt to earn a revenue stream.

Stick with Windows XP. Use a third party browser and never MS IE. Set to delete cookies when the browser closes. Make regular backups or valuable data (which should always be done regardless of O/S). Be prepared to re-load the O/S.

Unfortunately understanding how an O/S functions is more important now than EVER before.

Windows 2000 / WinXP / Win2003 (server O/S) was UNDOUBTEDLY Microsoft's zenith. It's been down hill from there on. Ironically the much hated Vista turned out to be not so bad after all, being only a half-way-house to shitty Win7.

I'm a professional developer. Since I got used to windows 8 I now get pissed off using 7, xp, etc..

Once you understand how / why windows 8 works you'll FLY through tasks.

I've got logs of Apple developers who frequently stop and watch (in amazement) how fast my Visual Studio / Windows 8 box runs. Mind you, I build enterprise-level back end server code as well as complex front-end interfaces.

Windows 8 memory footprint is MUCH smaller than 7's. That means lots of memory for apps. It's background services are now optimized and run exactly what / when I need them.

The tiles are awesome. What used to take me 2-4 clicks takes a button press+1 click. So fast some people can't even follow how many tasks I can complete a second.

The only way to get even close to same performance in 7 is to clutter up your desktop with shortcuts, ect..

Search is much nicer now...probably the best of any OS.

Apps are more response, snappier, and overall memory performance is excellent.

Here's some hints to make you love windows 8:

1) The tiles are just a replacement for all those icons on your desktop. Think of them as your well-organized "2nd desktop" and it will make a lot more sense. You can organize them however you like. You can search them, move them, group them, Pin and unpin them. What's not to love?

2) Windows key. This is your shortcut for most things. Get used to using it. A day or two at most and it will start to feel natural. In a week you'll get pissed off when windows 7 doesn't respond to it in the same way.

3) Windows key + X or R = most of the control panel / admin tasks. You'll find this is MUCH easier than rooting around in the start menu in windows 7.

Seriously, it's Microsoft's BEST windows ever. It finally feels like a heavily optimized UNIX OS with all the rich MS API's we love.

8 came out too fast and has no real benefits. 8 is worse than windows millennium edition.
2000, xp, and 7 are the best. even vista is better than 8.

I would comment in Windows 8 pro's and con's but can already tell that it would fall in deaf ears with a void in between.

I think I'm gonna downgrade from win 7.0 back to XP pro. As long as you don't use Internet Explorer and keep your antivirus software updated, you should be ok.

Then put a Paint icon on your Desktop. Are you people that computer illiterate?

The PC market is not dying...
Two reasons for slow sales....

Win8 has just stopped people from buying new equipment with that crap installed.
No one wants it.....they are going to wait....and meanwhile, and upgrade their old equipment.

The other reason is, most modern PC's have enough power and memory to do what people need them to do now.
Even models that are 3-5 years old do a good job for most peoples needs.
Therefore....no need to run out for a new PC/laptop as soon as the new models come out.

Didnt like it at first but you soon get use to it. Unless you have learning difficulties like a lot of posters on here

they should not have called it windows at all. it should've been launched as a separate product. too much basic windows functionality has changed or moved... what other industry changes the basic method of using their product without a major reason or an emergency even? having to download extras to make it feel like windows is crazy. better to make you download all the new crap if you want it. trying to be "revolutionary" every 3 years is stupid.

They have certainly screwed up with Windows 8, no doubt about it.

It is FAR from the worst OS Microsoft have released though, i can only assume you never tried Windows ME.
