Even windows 7 is shit. The two most stable platforms were 98 and xp everything else is buggy and shit. They get it right(ish) with xp and 98 then go and flip everything on its head. Windows is shit pure and simple, always has been and always will be. Should just change to red hat or some other Linux os and put windows in the trash bin where it belongs. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 56507882 well i just don't see how Windows 9 is going to be any better, unless they just re-release windows 7. If it's a build on windows 8.1, it is guaranteed to be utterly useless garbage. they change every intelligent feature, no start menu in the bottom corner, some silly mouse over menu that seems to work willy nilly, almost like it's designed to drive you nuts. That is all I can come up with as to why it is designed like this, I think it is designed to drive you nuts if you try to do anything with it. it's like an intermediate step to just having this thing that sits on your desk like a chromebook, and you can't run any programs or change the software. I honestly think that is the plan, to kill the personal computer. That is what that Ellison guy is preaching, that your computer should just be this one way device for the governmnt to monitor you and of no real empowerment to the masses. You can toggle between the APE (app) screen and the desktop screen (interface) by pushing command + x you can push the command button alone to bring up the app interface you can gain access to your files this way too. cmd+x takes a lil getting used to. they are obviously preparing us to use apps in every way possible. Absolute shittiest operating system ever created, hands down. "Download Windows 7 the 100% Legal Way There are actually two ways to download Windows 7 legally but they each have a caveat that you're probably not going to like. Your first option is a free download of Windows 7 Enterprise. Unfortunately, it's only a 90-day trial after which time your computer will shut down every hour. This Windows 7 download is intended for testing by software and hardware developers and isn't a good long-term solution. Your second option is to download Windows 7 for "free" as part of your paid MSDN Subscription. This professional subscription by Microsoft grants you access to Windows 7 downloads and product keys, as well as downloads and keys for most of the software Microsoft produces. Unless you're a software programmer or IT professional, this very expensive subscription program is almost certainly not worth the money. Note: Prior to late 2012, Windows 7 was available for individuals to purchase and download directly from the Microsoft Store. While this is still an option for Windows 8, it is, unfortunately, no longer possible for Windows 7. Of course if downloading Windows 7 isn't necessary in your situation, your other option is to purchase a copy of Window 7 on DVD. Microsoft no longer sells Windows 7 directly, but you might still find copies of Windows 7 available from TigerDirect, NewEgg, or other retailers as well, so shopping around for the best price is a good idea. That's it. So yes, all reasonable legal options require paying, either for a DVD in a retail package, or for a download via a professional subscription, in ISO format, for burning to a disc or transfer to a USB device. Note: If you have a Windows 7 disc, and are only trying to download Windows 7 because you need to install it on your computer which does not have an optical drive, there is a way to get the installation files from your DVD onto a flash drive. See How To Install Windows 7 From USB for instructions." [link to pcsupport.about.com] |

Absolute shittiest operating system ever created, hands down. Sorry OP but you're just as stupid as your thread. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1416729 Been using Windows 8 and now 8.1. You just have to learn the new tricks and command.. It's the best so far..don't have any problems other than the hotspot connection not working. So much this. I'm a professional developer. Since I got used to windows 8 I now get pissed off using 7, xp, etc.. Once you understand how / why windows 8 works you'll FLY through tasks. I've got logs of Apple developers who frequently stop and watch (in amazement) how fast my Visual Studio / Windows 8 box runs. Mind you, I build enterprise-level back end server code as well as complex front-end interfaces. Windows 8 memory footprint is MUCH smaller than 7's. That means lots of memory for apps. It's background services are now optimized and run exactly what / when I need them. The tiles are awesome. What used to take me 2-4 clicks takes a button press+1 click. So fast some people can't even follow how many tasks I can complete a second. The only way to get even close to same performance in 7 is to clutter up your desktop with shortcuts, ect.. Search is much nicer now...probably the best of any OS. Apps are more response, snappier, and overall memory performance is excellent. Here's some hints to make you love windows 8: 1) The tiles are just a replacement for all those icons on your desktop. Think of them as your well-organized "2nd desktop" and it will make a lot more sense. You can organize them however you like. You can search them, move them, group them, Pin and unpin them. What's not to love? 2) Windows key. This is your shortcut for most things. Get used to using it. A day or two at most and it will start to feel natural. In a week you'll get pissed off when windows 7 doesn't respond to it in the same way. 3) Windows key + X or R = most of the control panel / admin tasks. You'll find this is MUCH easier than rooting around in the start menu in windows 7. Seriously, it's Microsoft's BEST windows ever. It finally feels like a heavily optimized UNIX OS with all the rich MS API's we love. And GM has decided that the traditional accelerator and brake on the floor just clutter things up, so they are moving those functions to a redesigned steering wheel that is about the size and shape of an airplane pilot's yoke. By moving those items off the floor and to one's hands area, which is already handling the steering, they feel that people will be faster and more effective with accelerating and stopping. They will have MORE CONTROL! On top of that disabled people will find it easier to drive cars!! GM plans to make this change MANDATORY and ALL cars built after 1/1/15 will incorporate this improvement. NO EXCEPTIONS. They feel this will make Driving FUN again ... and besides who wants to use "inefficient" technology that was invented and first sold 110 years ago (floor mounted accelerator and floor mounted brake pedal)? GM will make all the other car companies look like buggy whip manufactures at best with their OLD technology when they make this change to how people SHOULD drive. SOUNDS LIKE A WINNER TO ME!! Just like Windows 8!! OH ... and while we are at it can we get a redesigned light switch. Talk about OLD technology! Thomas Edison invented that thingamajig nearly 130 years ago ... Time for some NEW TECHNOLOGY in the everyday Light Switch arena! Who wants "OLD" technology? OLD technology is soooo boring. |

Punching cards is too lazy. Why don't we start by hard-wiring circuits? Microprocessor is an evil invention. Modifying hardware to do things trivial for a brilliant mind like von Neumann. This is the result of the iPod/generic apple product/tablet generation. Mindnumbing one click app styles taking over everything. All because people are lazy impatient fucktards now, and a small minority still give a damn and are innovative enough to want to keep their own control and input on things. - Supermarket one click scan and basket guns - Stop/Start tech in cars - Autopilot modes - Autosync - Autobackup - Target Adverts - TV Guide suggestions on smart TV etc All things that try to do it all for you without you actually having to really think about it. Let alone what is actually happening when you click them. Sync this. Update this. Send reports of that. All in one cloud/shared hub. And don't even get me started on the AI thing, and deciding what they think we like. Absolutely terrifying what they know and can predict about our every move. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 57857701 get this, if you wanna find the paint program, you gotta do a search?? wtf! so I gotta do a search and find the mainstay programs. that is too dumb to even comprehend. No, you don't understand. There are basically 3 different screens to use: (1) The desktop (2) The start screen (3) The All apps screen This last screen has every installed program arranged in boxes and where you can find all of the windows programs you're used to using. It take a few seconds to scroll through them all to find paint. Now if you're talking about some "app" called paint and on the start screen, don't use it. btw, to get to the last screen, while in the start screen, right click and there's a button on the right side "All apps". And windows 8.1 gives you an arrov in the start screen to get to the all apps screen, without doing a right click. lol, the instructions that you just gave me are like, twice as complicated as what you had to do before. In fact, to use paint before, all I had to do was click the fucking paint icon on my desktop. programmers have some sort of mental illness which reduces their ability to distinguish between complex tasks and simple tasks. They cannot distinguish between simplicity and complexity, or understand what the point is, in making something simple instead of complex. this is just basically the same phenomena of road construction worker. Road construction workers make more money the longer they take to finish the job. Programmers get paid more money to make things more complicated. Then put a Paint icon on your Desktop. Are you people that computer illiterate? Re the last statement in bold - TOO TRUE. Yes, we all complain; but, really, how hard is it to take the time and set things up the way you want? I'm a senior and didn't grow up with this stuff like a lot of you did. I've been through WinME, XP, Win7, and now Win8. I turned my Win8 computer on and then sat there in tears for a minute or so until I figured it out. Then I looked for the programs I use every day and pinned them to my taskbar (I hate a cluttered-up desktop). It didn't take all that long and was actually kind of fun. Now it's set up the way I want. I do believe a lot of the whining on here is because when we get a new computer/OS things are not set up the way we had them before and we have to spend a few minutes or hours moving things around to the way we like to have them. How awful. I also use keyboard strokes a lot of the time. This is from my old DOS days before Windows (gosh, that takes me back). It's a good idea to learn the keystrokes in case your mouse fails and you're stuck not knowing how to do things. A lot of times it's faster as well. I love the Internet! Too bad you young whippersnappers don't appreciate how wonderful all this is. Going from manual typewriters and photocopiers that didn't collate to swiping a mobile screen is simply amazing. Stop complaining! |

It's obviously too hard to just imagine the user experience and have touch once for context with actions and a second time to open. The writing was on the wall when they introduced that new version of Office with ribbons and shit, so they flushed down the toilet about 10+ years of UI consistency that allowed people to just get stuff done as second nature with keyboard combos etc., so that the world could lose THOUSANDS of MAN-HOURS re-learning how to do something that was previously trivial and took 2 seconds. Software companies like MS have long since lost the notion that most serious/busy users don't give a fuck what it looks like as long as it gets stuff the fuck done in the click of the fingers - the computing power is there to do that, but it's being used to carry the load of toy-town UI. To answer the question of why it's called the Charms bar; it's got to the point where the only way Microsoft can have something work like a charm is if they hijack the fucking word.
