I Just Ate 2 Organic Tomatoes - First Time in 30 Years...I AM PISSED!!!
I grew up in Indiana...farm country in a small city of Elwood the home of Red Gold which has become a premium tomato industry brand in the last 20 years. Family, especially grandparents and great grandparents always had gardens/orchards of every vegetable//fruit imaginable that grew in Indiana. Tomatoes and cucumbers were always my favorite as a kid and I have never stopped loving them. Today I decided to pay $4.99 lb and buy a couple of organic tomatoes to put GMO to the test which I have read about for years.

The difference in color and TASTE was AMAZING. Just over $5 for 2 big firm ripe tomatoes (unbelievable considering you could by them for $.05 each when I was a kid). I was torn between the incredible taste and the anger of what GMO has done to our foods. We are being cheated and denied healthy food and that really pisses me off now. I literally felt like I was eating the equivalent of filet mignon from the vegetable world.

Going organic now. No "if's, and or but's". Can't wait to get a hold of organic cucumbers or anything else including meat. The price is stupid but I am confident my body and mind will thank me for it!

Yeah, tomatoes suffer the worst through gmo because they've been made to ship, not eat.

I really enjoyed them. So did my daughter who grew up on GMO vegetables and loves tomatoes. She was blown away. I didn't even say a word just had her try them. She eats tomatoes every day and fell in love with them.

Not all organically grown tomatoes escape this, though...many are still picked when green to ripen after.

Good for you, OP. I did the same about two years ago. You won't always be able to tell the difference with vegetables, taste-wise. Fruits are far better, and grass fed meats really shine as well.

Good to know. But I would think green organic to ripen later still has to taste significantly better than GMO produce. Right?

From someone who grows many tomatoes, it is the strain, the soil they are gown in and how ripe they are at harvest that results in a really great tomato. Almost all tomatoes are harvested green. Your bumper on your car is rated at 9 miles per hour, tomatoes for transit are rated at 11 mph. Grow your own if you have the sun. Both tomatoes and cucumbers can be grown in 5 gallon buckets (then you can bring them inside for glp doom alerts).

Yes, but I haven't had a conventional tomato in quite a while...the consistency is definitely better, as is the color.

It's not like biting into an heirloom one fresh off the vine, though.

I've been impressed overall with the longevity of all the organic stuff...I dare say they are good bit longer than conventional, which matters when things are so much pricier.

It's because people keep dumping out hoards of babies so the population keeps increasing dramatically and can you imagine the cost if all food was "organic"? The reason the cheap food is cheap is because it's cheap food.. you get what you pay for, and bulk cheap stuff is how we manage to feed the growing masses.

Stop fucking making babies!!

I live in the same county. I even lived in Elwood for a year about 23 years ago. Both my husband and his brother worked for Red Gold a long time ago. But anyway, I know what you mean about the difference in taste. When we first moved to the country and planted our own garden we were amazed by how different the tomatoes tasted. They were so good we'd pick them off the vine and eat them right then and there. Most store bought tomatoes barely have any taste at all.

If you can find grass fed meat you will be shocked by the difference in taste with that too. I have bought all my meat from a local farmer for around 7 years now. I couldn't imagine ever going back to store bought meat. Eggs from local farmers also tastes better especially if they are really dark orange. We're hoping to raise our own chickens and goats before the end of summer.

But all food was organic before world war 2. Rockefeller needed new markets to sell petroleum products. All non organic fertilizers were derived from natural gas, all pesticides were derived from petroleum. By the way any of you that burn wood for heating the byproduct is potash. Sift the potash through a 1/4 inch metal screen and you will have the best fertilizer money cannot but. It contains 5 percent potassium. Potassium is what creates all buds, fruits and flowers. With it large tomatoes, without it no tomatoes.

Yet, GMO crops, over time decrease yield, because they destroy the soil.

It's about the money and control over food sources, not overpopulation, not feeding the hungry. These are the snake oils Monsanto is trying to sell the world.

I'm growing organic tomatoes this year. Bought the non~gmo seeds from seedsnow.com and even the blooms are different ; kind of huge double bloom very beautiful. I suspected that the plants would have a worse germination percentage than gmos but out of 50 seeds all germinated. I now have too many plants. Cant wait to taste them! not bad for 99 cents

Funny. Growing up as a kid my grandfather owned a propane business which catered to farms and the rural community. I used to always see signs on fields that said "Monsanto" and when I asked as a child what that meant I was told the fields were treated to keep insects away from destroying the crops. Fast forward 30+ years I have known for quite sometime the plants were genetically altered. Terrible.

Most of you don't understand "GMO".

Wash your "organic" tomatoes because you shouldn't trust lack of insecticide, herbicide or bacteria.

GMO foods can only be dangerous because they are developed for heavier uses of herbicide or insecticide.

Your digestive system recognizes, sugars, fats, proteins, some vitamins and minerals and passes fiber, excess minerals, water.

The stories about taking on DNA you eat is utterly rediculous! DNA is protein that gets broken down molecularly into SUGAR, glycose and then ATP.

The rest gets FLUSHED.

Since when do conspiracy site visitors even TRUST what they're being told, especially when it comes to MAKING MONEY.

THINK, study Biology 101 if you care that much.

SOME "organic" is grown in a hot house and picked ripe. This is the only reason it tastes better. I've bought, eaten plenty of nasty tasting or textured organic.

Best option, grow your own :)

Meat should be consumed in small quantities, and it's the fat content that makes it healthy or not.

Fish, veggies, rice will help you live long. Avoid white sugar, substitute honey and fruit to sweeten.

Good luck, live long and healthy!
