Indiana couple who refused electricity froze to death in home
Attention survivalists: if you want to live off the grid, know how to do it, and live in the right kind of home to do it!

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. — A couple whose bodies were found in a rural western Indiana home died this winter from hypothermia after they chose to live without electricity, authorities said.

The Vigo County coroner ruled that the deaths of 51-year-old Daniel Young and 53-year-old Donna Young were accidental. Police found their bodies in late April, after a relative called concerned about their safety because no one answered the door at the home and they hadn't been heard from for an extended amount of time.

Coroner Susan Amos told the Terre Haute Tribune-Star that she believes the Youngs died in February and that nothing unusual was found in toxicology tests.

The irony.
When you find a piece of shit along side the road and you poke it with a stick, what do you expect to find inside of it, gold?
No, it's just going to stink more.

The human race survived a long time without electricity. They obviously just take the proper measures to keep themselves warn.

You can refuse electricity, but at least do have some sense. Build a fireplace. Please.

Most people where I come from either don't have electricity or can only get it part of the time. We had one hypothermia incident with an elderly couple several years ago when it got down to 10 below. They lived in an uninsulted shack.

Many people with prepaid utilities like the service below only plug the card in the meter to use electricity when they want to do laundry:

The SmartPower system is similar to a pre-paid phone card, in that the consumer pre-pays for electricity by visiting a convenient kiosk and downloading credits onto a SmartCard. Then, they take the loaded card home and slip it into the digital SmartPower in-home unit, which accepts the payment. The unit then keeps a running tabulation, and can display current power usage, average daily power usage, and even projects the amount of time left before more credits are needed. It lets the consumer know, up-to the minute, the amount of energy being used.
