Ok here is one for the Guiness Book. Last year my wife gave out $1 lottery tickets to guests at a party she threw. She had 5 left which she gave to me. Five different winning numbers nd I had 5 numbers of mine. I uncovered the five winng numbers first. Then I began on MY numbers.. The first one I uncoverd matched a winning number 41 PRIZE, Each succeeding number I uncovered matched matched a winning number with the same result $1PRIZE, Man was I pissed,

I prefer horses. Betting on horses is 100% succesful if you play it right.

The trick is to bet on the 1 to 3 or 1 to 4 horse to help keep your odds up without having to delve into the minutia of horse racing. Each time you bet you double your bet. Just make sure that you don't run out of money. When you do win you will turn a handy profit.

The money gets big quick though. $2 to $4 to $8 to $16 to $32 to $64. If you win on your $64 bet you'll win $190 while having only spent $124.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 58751000

What your talking about is called the Martingale system. It doesn't work. If the odds aren't in your favor at $2, they won't be in your favor at $4 either, or $4,000.

What the OP is talking about is playing in a way that shifts the odds into your favor, by trying to only play when the odds of winning are better. This won't work though, because even if the odds of winning are better at the beginning of a stack of tickets, they still are not in your favor, guaranteed!

Re: scratch off tickets...play the odds and you're more likely to win?
I wanted to add, that the only games where the odds can be in your favor are poker (if you're VERY good), and blackjack (if you're VERY good at counting cards.) I've put in serious hours practicing card counting, and I'm no where near good enough to shift the odds into my favor by any meaningful amount.

On top of counting cards, you have to appear relaxed, sip your drink, make small talk, and play each hand mathematically perfect. Play one hand wrong over the course of an hour, and you can shift the odds back to the house, even if you're counting cards. People practice for literally hours every day, memorizing charts and practicing mental math speed drills.

Knowing all of this, if you think you can have the odds be statistically in your favor by playing scratch off lottery tickets, then someone needs to tell you that you're delusional. If you enjoy buying a lottery ticket once in a while and know that the odds aren't in your favor, that's fine. If you truly believe you've found a way to have the odds be in your favor, then you have a gambling problem, and I would seek help.

I had that happen on both my cards yesterday.....one had all $1s, one had all $2s....maybe it's designed that way intentionally?

when I was a store clerk in the 80's . Use to check the winners on the lottery check off sheet , if there were 10 or more tickets sold out of a roll with no winners. I would buy the next five tickets in that roll. Use to pocket an average of 250 a week doing it. So the odds are not as much in your favore as you may think.

Just to correct you.....my initial reason was based on the beginning of rolls idea/buying in bulk but.....it's more based now around going with the general ticket odds as a whole and when more prizes exist, although I'd like to think even when they are a bit less, if there's supposed to be a winner in every 3 or 4 tickets.....there's bound to be at least a little bit to be won there.

So it's not based on where the ticket stack is so much now.

the lottery is a fools game

don't waste your money

better off spending it on silver
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

I still play an occasional ticket, or put tickets in a birthday card for someone else.

It surely IS a wast of money for a small amount of entertainment, or diversionary time.

It's like those tickets are a delusion, or a dream being sold.

If only, maybe if, next time...etc...

Only idiots play the lottery in any form. You aren't going to win anything that is going to be life changing. You have a better chance of getting struck by lightning.

Lottery is a poor and uneducated tax.

Re: scratch off tickets...play the odds and you're more likely to win?
So after seeing a post here earlier about playing the early part of rolls of tickets to get a better chance of winning on any given scratch ticket, and also the trick of buying them in bulk......I decided to try my luck at some tickets here.

Normally if buy, which isn't a lot.....very rare actually, both cause don't have a ton to spend and don't wanna get into a habit of overdoing it like my mom has over the years....I buy a ticket or two....sometimes a few different types and usually don't have much success.

This time though.....after looking at the prize odds on the Michigan lottery website....and seeing a $1 game that had a bunch of prizes still available (aka it looked like a fairly new set of tickets relative to other games), I did something different and bought a pack of 10. On those, I ended up with 2 winners totaling $7, $5 on one, and $2 on another. So for spending $10 I gained 2/3 of that back, not bad.

When I got back home I got to thinking....could it be the best chances to win are when you play according to the odds? Like for these $1 tickets...the odds were about 1 in 5....and sure enough it had worked out for me where each batch of 5 had 1 winner in the bunch. I didn't entirely break even course, but I came fairly close and I'd like to think over time if I played according to this strategy and according to the games that had the most prizes available at a given time...I'd be liable to not only do that but maybe even get ahead by quite a bit after a while.

I am not intending to play a ton per se over time now.....just what I could afford to do, maybe capping at $50 over a certain period of time depending on what my budget is....but I am gonna start keeping track of this, as to the number of tickets I buy, the amount spent on them and the net gain/loss from that. I honestly do think there is a way here to take what for most is really a losers game, and turn the odds in your favor.

Anyone else ever try something like this with any type of success?
 Quoting: ajk

I dont play them myself. The place I work at, my boss uses a few guys from the local halfway house as cheap labor. I was talking to one of them the other day, and he was telling me that he had robbed 5 gas stations/stores that sold them. He said for shits and giggles he always took all the scratch offs. Usually 10 to 15 rolls at a time. He knew he could never turn them in, but just wanted to see what kinda winners a whole roll would have. Not much. Of all 5 stores the highest winner was 500$ and he had about a half dozen for the whole take.

Re: scratch off tickets...play the odds and you're more likely to win?
well, cashed in my $15 tickets and I am kicking myself....I went to get some new ones that literally just got released (using the initial $10 I got back, keeping the extra $5), and I came home only to realize that I got the wrong version of the game......that had less. I didn't exactly feel like going back to replace it, and woulda hated to return a winner.....so I decided to play em out....but no dice as I feared. So am down to half of the original $10 I started with....oh well I guess. Not sure what I wanna do now, this kinda got me a little upset, if mainly at myself for not paying enough attention.....which seems like the story of my life....but yeah.....

worse, I almost got $5 of the original game I played but I had to correct the cashier.....I half thought to keep those and maybe I should have.....sometimes I think I'm stupid. But.....ah well I guess, back to the drawing board......

lucky lol. I'm tempted to try with my last $5 of the inital 10 to try and play the game I wanted to somewhere else but not sure......I may just to see but don't wanna overdo it. Should be careful of when I spend and how much. I might do some in bulk every so often (namely $1 tickets) and leave it at that but we'll see.

odds are higher on those though of at least getting your money back if not more....probably a 1 in 2 shot.....and remember the higher the ticket the higher the minimum is too.

Dude there's way better ways to blow your time/money. Scratch-offs are for people who don't understand odds. I say that in the kindest way possible because I actually remember you from the distant GLP past.
