Pretty much if you don't bother them, they won't bother you. BTW, we have encroached on their environment, not the other way around. Contrary to popular belief, NJ has many rural areas, which are now being overdeveloped. The bears, Raccoons, etc.,. have no where else to go. It's not like they can just get a moving van and go deeper into the woods. |

They are capable of killing a human with one swipe of their paw. And their population from New England and the rest of the northeast, to the Carolinas, Florida, Kentucky, and out west are exploding. The U.S. Humane Society has been trying to get laws passed in all states that will restrict bear trapping and hunting. Folks, black bears are at the top of the food chain and their only real predator are humans. Yearly culls are the only effective way to keep the menace caused by black bear over population in check. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 42041558 Here's an article from Bangor daily News of Maine: [link to bangordailynews.com] When I was young, hiking was always a pleasure. I never felt any fear. I even slept overnight without a tent. If I saw someone it was a fellow hiker and of like mind. Animals that were beutiful and not dangerous. Today I wouldn't hike unless I was armed and with others that were armed.
