John Wilkes Booth was an actor who was appearing in a play at the Ford Theater in Washington, D.C. the night that president Abraham Lincoln was shot.

On April 14, 1865, John Wilkes Booth crept up a stairway that led to the presidential box and shot President Lincoln at point blank range, inflicting a mortal wound.

John Wilkes Booth was part of a conspiracy to kill President Lincoln that included EIGHT other people. The large group of co-conspirators included John Harrison Surratt, Jr., a Catholic seminary student from Washington, D.C. who studied in Richmond, Virginia, as well as his mother, Mary Eugenia Jenkins Surratt.

Mary Surratt was a devout Catholic who owned and ran a boarding house in Washington, D.C. It was in the Surratt's boarding house that John Wilkes Booth and his co-conspirators plotted the kidnapping, and later, the assassination of President Lincoln.

The Surratt's boarding house was a meeting place for many catholic priests. It was known to be regularly frequented by Mary Surratt's current and former Catholic parish priests. Mary eventually became the first woman executed by the United States of America for her role in the Lincoln assassination.

On the surface, John Surratt Jr. was a seminary student. However, throughout the American Civil War, John Surratt also served as an agent for the Confederate States of America (CSA).

Although John Wilkes Booth was killed soon after he shot President Lincoln, co-conspirator John Surratt avoided detection by police and managed to escape to Canada. There, he was harbored by various Catholic priests. Eventually, he made his way to the Vatican in Rome.

When John Surratt was found at the Vatican he was employed as one of the Popes' guards - he was part of the papal guard unit known as the Papal Zouave. When he was taken into custody he wore the uniform of the Papal Zouave (see picture at link).

After being apprehended, Surratt was extradited back to the United States where he stood trial. However, as several years had passed since Lincoln's assassination, Surratt failed to be convicted of any crime and instead was freely released from custody.

Unlike his mother, Mary, and the eight other co-conspirators who were each hanged for President Lincoln's assassination, John Surratt escaped punishment for his role in the murder when his trial resulted in a mistrial.

Was President Lincoln assassinated because he had the audacity to authorize the issuance of a form of money that was independent of America's central bankers (see footnote).

(After the assassination, it was rumored that a Catholic priest who traveled to Washington, D.C. and stayed at the Surratt boarding house, but went on from there by train to Minnesota told fellow train passengers what a shame it was that President Lincoln had been assassinated and this was said a full day before the President had actually been shot.)

Was the Catholic Church (the Vatican) behind the assassination of President Lincoln?

For me, there were too many Catholics officially implicated in the assassination of President Lincoln for the involvement of the Catholic Church to have been incidental.

During the Civil War (1861-1865), President Lincoln needed money to finance the War from the North. The Bankers were going to charge him 24% to 36% interest. Lincoln was horrified and went away greatly distressed, for he was a man of principle and would not think of plunging his beloved country into a debt that the country would find impossible to pay back.

Eventually President Lincoln was advised to get Congress to pass a law authorizing the printing of full legal tender Treasury notes to pay for the War effort. Lincoln recognized the great benefits of this issue. At one point he wrote:

“... (we) gave the people of this Republic the greatest blessing they have ever had – their own paper money to pay their own debts...”

The Treasury notes were printed with green ink on the back, so the people called them “Greenbacks”.

Lincoln printed 400 million dollars worth of Greenbacks (the exact amount being $449,338,902), money that he delegated to be created, a debt-free and interest-free money to finance the War. It served as legal tender for all debts, public and private. He printed it, paid it to the soldiers, to the U.S. Civil Service employees, and bought supplies for war.
