Do you people who voted Bush forget how it was when he was president? He was taking us to a very scary place. It was Bush that started openly torturing people, spying on every citizen, consolidated power into the security state, starting multiple wars, etc. When he was president it felt like we were going straight into a fascist military dictatorship with zero individual rights. How anyone with a sane mind could prefer those dark days over these slightly less dark days is beyond me.

It was quite interesting to chat with one of my wife's students the other day. I heard him say he was a democrat. I intervened and asked him if he actually knew what the democratic party stood for. Now this kid is only 19, pretty bright, higher middle class. When I asked him about democrats, he started with what they've been doing...I had to interrupt him and remind him the question. Did he know the difference between a Democrat and a Republican, not what they were doing. He told me no, he didn't. I asked him why he says he's a Democrat instead of saying he was a Republican instead. He couldn't answer. I told him to go home and read about 4 major cities in the United States. New York, L.A., Chicago, and Detroit. Then read about the differences of Democrats and Republicans, then decide.


Then I explained how the electoral college works. He kind of knew. But I hope I taught this young man something that he will refer to for the rest of his voting years.
