like the OP, I throw potatoes in the hot coals of my fire... I like to wrap them with aluminum foil and butter if i got it.

If its a "short" trip -week or less...

I bring Bacon, a Beef Roast, flour for bread and gravy... eggs... several cans of Spam.

of course this is for several meals... and i cook the beef roast in a dutch oven on the first or second day.

sometimes I make a beef vegetable soup out of the beef roast.

if its gonna be a 2 week trip...

powdered eggs (i make my own)

dehydrated soups (i buy this)

Salt Cured Smoked Ham

potatoes

Spam

Flour


and both trips = Fish or other game I catch

No I don't think so. I'm doing this willingly, and I know I have a nice home to go back to. Most homeless have had something fairly bad happen to them to be where they are.

Nice! You eat way better than I do, I typically go with dehydrated meals and a couple potatoes(because I love them). The chili tonight is rare, I didn't have to pack it far. I try to stay somewhat "lightweight".
