[link to www.breitbart.com] BRILLIANT! Now I must flush leftover food or wash it down the sink for fear of garbage Nazi's fining me! I HOPE THEY UPGRADE THE SEWER SYSTEM REAL SOON! :inIreland: I lived in Seattle not that long ago. The worst thing is when some asshole is walking by your can and throws fast food crap in your compost can or you recycling can and you get fined for it. I think it's great to compost food waste and would do it voluntarily--on my own, or if that weren't an option it's great the city does it. Every year you get a couple of free bags of compost. They really are like Nazis, though. It's the FORCING I have a problem with. sees |

People should compost, it's the best fertilizer and it's the responsible thing to do. I support it. "the emphasis is to change behaaviro" We should fine men for irresponsibly planting their seeds too. $5,000 would be a small fine to start with…..to change behavior. Just kidding…sorta. |

I noticed he stopped after I started leaving used feminine "accoutrements" inside my bags, attached to the top. Nobody will touch your garbage again. |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 41844146 United States 09/24/2014 02:02 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | This article and video from the OP are not clear. If you throw too much into the TRASH, (food) - then you get a $1 fine. In Seattle, food is supposed to be thrown into the YARD WASTE receptacle for the city to pick up (NOT the regular trash). I think they are saying they want food thrown away in the yard waste receptacle cans, and NOT the regular trash receptacles. SO poorly written and communnicated across the board. They have the same law for throwing too many recyclable things into the regular trash, instead of the recycle bins. |

I'm pretty sure the restaurants that throw away the most food won't last. Again this is a law that doesn't need to be there as the nature of running a business will see the the wasters will go under. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 57108741 United States 09/24/2014 02:22 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Anyone remember when recycling was expected to be done voluntarily, because it would SAVE the citizens' money? Quoting: Anonymous Coward 2664076 Well now... thanks to the liberals... its mandatory... SEE HOW THAT WORKS! And since it costs more to recycle than money recouped selling the results, the tax payer must subsidize the recycling "business". |
Mickeyblue User ID: 9806228 United States 09/24/2014 02:23 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | "Seattle Public Utilities requested the new rules after falling short of its recycling goals of 60 percent of trash by 2015, according to the Times. The recycling rate in 2013 was 56 percent." Quoting: Anonymous Coward 20241035 Laws are passed to make money. The above is similar to what was done with energy. In order to charge higher rates, they must make YOU think that it is YOUR fault so that you do not look to the simple fact that they just want to make higher profits. Here is how it works. 1. In order to charge higher rates and make more profit, they came up with the idea that there is only so much energy. 2. This allows the introduction of "conservation" = YOU must conserve - not them, YOU. 3. Therefore, they will be able to charge you higher rates if YOU use more. YOU will be charged the more YOU use. If you go above a certain amount of energy used, they can charge you higher rates! Because it is YOUR fault and not theirs. 5. This keeps you distracted from the pure fact that THEY are the ones making a higher profit. This is a shell game. If conservation were truly needed for energy, why are they not screaming about all the technology products flooding the markets each year that require the use of energy? Well let's see, then the Republicans will get voted in and they will promise to address it which they will by privatizing this and then it will go public and the rates will have to be increased some more and a percentage will be imputed to all. |

Read the book, "Nudge" by non other than Cass Sunstien. [link to www.amazon.com] It's all about how they manipulate people through "nudges". Sort of like a slow herding process. Move the sheep slowly to where you want them to be. Then close the gate. |

BeelzeBob User ID: 918411 United States 09/24/2014 02:43 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Good! This is one of my pet peeves. People who waste food. If you're not going to eat it, don't put it on your effin plate. Especially if it was from a slaughtered animal. If you've never done it, go watch an animal get butchered. Appreciate that an animal has died for you meal. I don't care if little johnny is full, don't put so much on his plate next time, or quit cooking or ordering so much damn food every meal. Our spoiled, pampered society drives me nuts. I'm not from Canada, not that there's anything wrong with that..... |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 41844146 United States 09/24/2014 03:03 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | This is just for idiots who fill up the regular trash dumpsters and regular trash cans full of a LOT of food. (then it weighs a ton, too - for the trash man to pick up). Throw your food into the Yard Waste receptacles, and you will never get a $1 fine. This makes sense - why throw food into the landfill, when you can throw it into the city's compost pile? It's not hard, those of you too lazy to even get this. |
Chrit User ID: 60551496 United States 09/24/2014 03:05 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | This reminds me of what they have been trying/doing in Cleveland. Basically they said each household MUST to recycle a % of its trash that is thrown away. Well this also meant that if you personally take your stuff in for recycling and make a few bucks off of it, they will fine you heavily because they want your scrap metals and other things so THEY can pull a profit. If you donate you old newspapers and turn in your cans you’re getting a $100 dollar fine per offence. In the first year alone it was expected to generate over a million dollars for the city. [link to blog.cleveland.com] [link to www.cleveland.com] I'm only human, it's my biggest flaw. We must all realize a sink a chair and a pillow are all luxuries of home and a soldiers helmet takes the place of all three. |

My food waste goes into a plastic waste bag under the kitchen sink. Then that is closed up and placed into the larger trash barrel bag which is also tied up. They going to start tearing open garbage bags to see what's in them? |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 20589235 United States 09/24/2014 03:09 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Just dump it in alleys and behind businesses. Raccoons and SKUNKS love that kind of "dinner" ... and their population will EXPLODE. "FREE FOOD FOR ALL" they will send down the Coon and Skunk information pipeline. Soon "Animal Control" will be overwhelmed with furry creatures getting into EVERYTHING (and coons in particular are very destructive). Shoot they might even get Bears and other furry creatures trying to make "wilderness" Seattle home too ... since it will be easier to live there than to live in the woods. |

If they get taken to court, they can show proof that they are doing the recycling. They could make a video of themselves taking in all their recyclables. But usually you get a receipt when you recycle anyway. |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 41844146 United States 09/24/2014 03:25 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | It's grocery stores and restaurants that waste all the food. There are even groups of people who aren't even homeless who go around the back of these businesses to collect some of the food waste. The other day I was at Costco and all their bananas were on the verge of going over-ripe. They were still selling them but at a discount. They should have been GIVING them away they were so bad. (like if you empty all the old stuff from your refrigerator at once, into the trash can and it weighs 125 pounds). |
