ISON turned out to be a dud, but we have another event to look forward to this coming Sunday, October 19, 2014. It could be an end to life as we know it for Mars.

It will be a very close meeting for Mars and Comet Siding Spring.

Astronomers are excited, to say the least. Comet Siding Spring was discovered just last year and its trajectory through the Solar Sysem tracked and prognosticated. And by astronomical standards, Comet C/2013 A1 will pass dangerously close to Mars.

The comet will miss the Red Planet by just 87,000 miles (140,000 kilometers) at 2:27 p.m. EDT (1827 GMT) on Sunday. In comparison, the Moon orbits Earth at an average distance of 239,000 miles (384,600 km).

Nah, it's going to be 80 thousand miles away. still very close though.

I tuned in the the NASA channel the other day and this is a HUGE thing for them. All orbiters and cameras (over a dozen including Hubble) will be pointing directly at Mars.

About 2:30 Eastern time at its height.

Has anyone seen any calcs on this? It sounds plausible or maybe there would be some gravitational effects from the passing.

I would expect at least some sparks/plasma activity between the 2 and they've conveniently blocked out any available angles of the event.
