I agree. For China, its all about the natural resources that they can grab. Siberia is a vast open land with lots of resources that Russia hasn't even begun to tap. China being friendly with Russia now gives them easier access to this land. Russia better watch out! |

Unwittingly, it appears that Russia's excursion into Crimea to supposedly "rescue" the Russians living there may come back to bite them. China can similarly claim that Siberia belongs to them, since China was forced to secede Siberia to Russia in the 19th century. It is interesting to note that China has sent many "settlers" into the Siberian region in recent years, and could easily decide to "rescue" them as well. Quoting: prichard072885 Here are the facts: 1. Nobody benefits more from Putin’s move in Crimea — and has bigger sanctioning potential on Russia over the long term — than China. 2. During the age of European colonial expansion in the 19th century, China was forced to cede the Far East and parts of Siberia to Russia. 3. During the last century, in 1960s and early 1970s, there were border tensions and even a number of armed clashes between China and the Soviet Union. 4. Small parts of Russian territory were then quietly ceded to China. While the two countries recently agreed to accept the current borders, China claims much larger chunks of what is now Russia. 5. As if to “settle” these claims by osmosis, Chinese settlers have been steadily moving into Russia’s remote, economically depressed and underpopulated regions. 6. By asserting its historic sovereignty over Crimea, Russia has set a dangerous precedent for the Chinese as they look over their northern border. 7. Unlike the poor Crimea that Russia just seized, those vast empty spaces of Russia’s Far East are full of all kinds of natural resources. 8. Energy resources are what China’s booming economy craves. And now China’s citizens live there too, much like ex-Soviet Russians residing in Crimea. 9. Russia’s Crimea strategy creates a legal precedent for other countries that have “alternative” border preferences, including China, to follow suit if the relevant opportunities arise. 10. Count on Beijing to bide its time – and, unlike Putin, not to do anything precipitous or unlawful. But when the time comes, it will not hesitate to re-assert its territorial claims against Russia. The upshot: After the Crimea incident, Russia will have no one to blame but Putin for providing a convenient excuse Information of the above can be found here: [link to www.theglobalist.com] This precedent wasnt set by Russia but by Nato in their war against Serbia and the secession of Kosovo from Serbia without approval of central authorities...The international court said it is fine to secede from a country without approval from central gov. back then...So Russia legally annexed Crimea |

So, with your logic, China then does have the authority to take back their land in Siberia? Quoting: prichard072885 If Siberia organised a referendum and asked to be annexed by China it would be legal yep...But I think most siberians are russian so... militarily they cannot take it anyway because Russia has nukes... |

For all those who claim this is "bullshit" or inaccurate, see this article at NY times as well. They don't usually print "bullshit" or "inaccurate historical facts" Why China Will Reclaim Siberia Frank Jacobs Frank Jacobs, the author of "Strange Maps: An Atlas of Cartographic Curiosities," blogs at Big Think. Updated July 4, 2014, 12:32 PM Sino-Siberia Map Joe Burgess/The New York Times “A land without people for a people without land.” At the turn of the 20th century, that slogan promoted Jewish migration to Palestine. It could be recycled today, justifying a Chinese takeover of Siberia. Of course, Russia's Asian hinterland isn't really empty (and neither was Palestine). But Siberia is as resource-rich and people-poor as China is the opposite. The weight of that logic scares the Kremlin. Moscow recently restored the Imperial Arch in the Far Eastern frontier town of Blagoveshchensk, declaring: “The earth along the Amur was, is and always will be Russian.” But Russia's title to all of the land is only about 150 years old. And the sprawl of highrises in Heihe, the Chinese boomtown on the south bank of the Amur, right across from Blagoveshchensk, casts doubt on the “always will be” part of the old czarist slogan. Like love, a border is real only if both sides believe in it. And on both sides of the Sino-Russian border, that belief is wavering. Siberia – the Asian part of Russia, east of the Ural Mountains – is immense. It takes up three-quarters of Russia's land mass, the equivalent of the entire U.S. and India put together. It's hard to imagine such a vast area changing hands. But like love, a border is real only if both sides believe in it. And on both sides of the Sino-Russian border, that belief is wavering. The border, all 2,738 miles of it, is the legacy of the Convention of Peking of 1860 and other unequal pacts between a strong, expanding Russia and a weakened China after the Second Opium War. (Other European powers similarly encroached upon China, but from the south. Hence the former British foothold in Hong Kong, for example.) The 1.35 billion Chinese people south of the border outnumber Russia's 144 million almost 10 to 1. The discrepancy is even starker for Siberia on its own, home to barely 38 million people, and especially the border area, where only 6 million Russians face over 90 million Chinese. With intermarriage, trade and investment across that border, Siberians have realized that, for better or for worse, Beijing is a lot closer than Moscow. I always knew this would happen sooner or later. There are about ten times as many Chinese as Russians and most of Siberia is empty of people but chocked full of natural resources. Do the math.
