Here in Europe it is drummed into all pregnant women and those wanting to get pregnant to take a 400 mg folic acid supplement per day in order to prevent spina bifida in the baby. But if you check the following link: Quoting: Anonymous Coward 67072005 [link to www.spinabifidaassociation.org] it seems the spina bifida association doesn't even know what the exact cause of the birth defect is. It is indeed strange that folic acid supplements are promoted as a matter of course (and even using guilt trips, as in "you wouldn't want to be responsible for your baby being born with a preventable defect") and over any other supplements a pregnant woman could or should take. I'm starting to really believe that one should interpret official guidelines using not only discernment but the 180 degrees rule: when they say you should, you'd better leave well alone, and when they say you shouldn't, assume it's actually good for you and incorporate it in your diet! It has been known since 1971 that low levels of B vitamins cause morning sickness...all morning sickness in the first trimester is B vitamin deficiency...folic acid being one... eating enough green leafy veggies will get you digestible vitamins to correct this... low B vitamins are at the root of cleft pallet, spina bifida and the deformations seen from thalidomide(the anti miscarriage drug from the 60's and 70's that cause gross deformations. Women who had enough B vitamins DID NOT have deformed children.... Thalidomide simply blocked the absorption 0f B Vitamins in the diet... the book stating these discoveries... "Be a healthy mother, have a healthy baby" pub. 1971 from AMA finding in 1969 and 1970 I agree, synthetic anything, will damage you. Find it in nature while you can. Most Noxious weeds that are on lists are high in the things we need...maybe that is why that are being eradicated so forcefully. |
