How does the water from Niagara Falls get back up? | |
Buzzcheeze User ID: 66949768 United States 03/28/2015 04:22 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | The Niagara River is the only river that flows North. Now as for the water to get back up, there is the Welland Canal in Ontario Canada. This is how the Great Lakes freighters move from Lake Ontario to Lake Erie. What little water transfers through, is like A shot glass full dumped into an Olympic size swimming pool. All the water that flows over Niagara Falls comes from the other four Great Lakes. When the upper level decreases and the lower level gets too high, Niagra falls literally flows backwards for long enough to balance the levels. |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 68745971 Brazil 03/28/2015 05:15 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | what a dumb question, and the stupidity of replies in this thread is just amazing. there is a bbc-documentary about this. you maybe can find it on youtube... basically, its black bugs. at the bottom of niagara they collect droplets of water, form them into little bigger drops, and roll them up to the lake again. as shown in the documentary, they do this as part of a mating ritual. the bugs loose around 50 percent of the drop on the way to the top, to be then judged by females and rewarded with intercourse or not. if a male bug does not succeed to impress the females with his drop, he will jump back down and start another try, because of this and because of their sheer quantity the still can manage to fill the lakes again and again. however, because of global warming, it was observed, that the bugs slowly start to change behaviour, and start to drink more, than they bring up again. because of this, many scientist are warning, that this cycle maybe will stop in near future. |

But how does the water from those streams get there to continuously keep adding the water that Falls at Niagara? Who makes this water? To reach that high point like you stated by thousands of streams (water flows downhill) then this water defies gravity if the origin is from the ground, why doesn't well water defy gravity and spill over upwards from the well? Hmm, let's see... Moisture from the ground evaporates. It forms clouds that contain the moisture (this is the part where you look at the sky and say "oh, yeah!") Clouds float in the sky, and then they hit some warmer part of the atmosphere and rise a bit. Then, follow this, they cool and can't hold as much moisture as they used to and...wait for it... Precipitation takes place. You know, like rain, snow, sleet, that sort of thing? Now the water is back on the ground and it drains in accordance with the topography of where it landed. Might be to a lake, a river, an ocean, those things we call "bodies of water" or "river systems". And then the whole thing happens all over again... Make sense? Next year in fifth grade we'll study the solar system! There is nothing quite as compelling as a bad idea whose time has come... Thulsa |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 68747801 United States 03/28/2015 08:36 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I waited for many years for somebody to put one and one together and notice that something was wrong; that everything we've been told doesn't add up. I'm near to death and had thought I'd go to my grave with this secret, but since somebody has finally asked the question I will risk all and divulge the secrets I have been entrusted with. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 68686067 After my time in SAC with the air force during the 1950s I went on to serve in the US army corps of engineers as a river navigation engineer. My specialty was pumping water, or rather designing pumping systems and installing them. In 1970 by supervisor called me into his office where he and an unknown gentleman were waiting. He was introduced as Mr. C. To make along story short I was offered a top secret post in New England. I was told nothing about what it was excepting that it was a matter of urgent national security. So that very night I packed 2 bags and was whisked away aboard a C133 cargomaster. We landed at Wright-Patterson AFB just as dawn was breaking. I was driven by jeep to a bunker entrance. At first the bunker did not impress until a door in the back was openned. We descended deep under ground until we came to a rail line. There I waited with Mr. C until a train came along. It sported a single passenger car and 2 flat bed cargo cars which were loaded and covered by a tarp which was itself covered in netting. To get on with the story we arrived at a facility directly underneath Niagara falls. I was warned before entering a secured area guarded by two soldiers not to freak out. Inside I encountered beings. They were humanoid. I was given a briefing by one of them who I learned usually used telepathic communication, but who in my case used english, though with difficulty. These beings were harvesting a unique form of energy generated by the positively charged falling water. This energy could be used to form a solid fuel when combined with gold under the proper pressure and atmosphere. The problem was that the great lakes were going dry. It had been estimated that within 50 years there would be no lakes left and the alien's only source of energy in this quadrant would be exhausted. A deal was struck where if we helped keep the lakes full they would give us new technologies. So my job was to figure out how to get the water back to the lakes. Obviously I couldn't get it all back there, but I needed to pump 50% of the flow back into the system. In other words I needed to pump almost a hundred thousand tons of water per minute. An obviously impossible task. Or so I thought. On those rail cars were the last of 24 top secret water pumps. They used ceramic impellers to drive water at incredible speeds and pressure. The pipes had been installed directly into the subterrainian rock. Each pipe measured 9 feet in diameter and was constructed out of high grade steel 9 inches thick. This allowed us to achieve pressures in excess of 13,000 PSI. The power was provided by a nuclear reactor built especially for the task. However it was a stop gap measure. Three mile island would provide us with enough power to fully power all our pumps, though it was still 4 years from completion. I had my doubts. The head was over a thousand feet. The transit was 69 miles. The volume was a hundred thousand tons per minute. IMPOSSIBLE. I'll not go into all the ins and outs. But yes, pumps return the water to the lakes. In the past glaciers replenished the lakes, but that had not bee nthe case for hundreds of years. So because of my efforts and those of many other fine people, you can now enjoy the tecvhnologies that bring you wifi and video games. This by far is one of the most cogent and reasonable explanations I've ever read. Well done. |
