why does it take the 'beam' so long to travel the circuit?

Time dilation?

The beam is travelling at almost the speed of light, but it is very fragile and must be directed very accurately throught the accellerating and focussing magnets. The LHC machine guys send the beam gradually further and further round the ring as they turn on those magnets. In the interim period, the beam just crashes into the beam dumps at ~the speed of light.. so it isnt travelling slowly, but it is being directed further each time.

Once they make it all the way round you have a circulating beam.

Then you need the beam in the other direction.

Then you need collisions.

ALICE is one of the experiments at "point 2" of the LHC ring.

The radiofrequency specialists are now working at point 4 of the LHC. They are preparing to ‘capture’ the beam; only a ‘captured’ beam can be accelerated. This morning beams have been circulating under their injection energy."

It's a good day to power up and start CERN. Everyone is home and the power is most plentiful to run the LHC. No short circuits today. I am excited about what is down the Rabbits Hole.

It appears to be difficult to get particles to band together at high speeds. It must take a lot of patients. Kind of like fishing, I am guessing.
