Anonymous Coward User ID: 32732391 United States 04/17/2015 09:04 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | We are now a Nation of Wimps Quoting: Alpacalips "NationofWimps.com explores the growing evidence that childrearing in America has taken a bewildering turn. Armed with hyperconcern and microscrutiny, parents are going to ludicrous lengths to take the lumps and bumps out of life for their children today. However well-intentioned, their efforts have the net effect of making kids more fragile. That may be why the young are breaking down in record numbers or staying stuck in endless adolescence. What's more, parents are seeking status and meaning for themselves in the achievements of their children. The trouble with turning tots into trophies is that the developmental needs of the young are sacrificed to the psychological needs of adults. But the biggest problem with pushing perfection may be that it masks the real secret of success in life. As any innovator will tell you, success hinges less on getting everything right than on how you handle getting things wrong. The ultimate irony is, in a flat world you don't make kids successful by pushing them to be perfect but by allowing them to become passionate about something that compels their interest." There are many employers who chose to hire non-American's because they have better work ethic than MOST of the young people now. "On a recent cross-country airline flight, I was seated next to a woman who is a vice president of a major investment banking company. She herself isn't a parent, but she comes in regular contact with young people. She asked what I was doing in L.A. I told her I had just given a speech to parents and faculty at a big and wealthy day school on the west side of L.A.. She confided that she now makes it a point NOT to hire the "fancy kids." She hires only the children of first-generation immigrants. Why? I asked. Because, she said, she has found that the kids of immigrants are resourceful, hard-working, good at figuring things out and at problem-solving. The "fancy kids," she says, always had parents running interference for them or cleaning up a mess in their wake. They're not persevering, not willing to work hard, not clever at problem-solving, not resourceful. The immigrant kids have parents who speak little English and lack the knowledge and ability to manipulate the system on their behalf. They are forced to learn to bring in their homework on time and to handle life on their own. Their "disadvantage" wound up making them stronger." [link to www.psychologytoday.com (secure)] wooaahhh, I disagree with that part. You better believe they know how to manipulate the system. I worked at a place where several Colombians bragged about getting several welfare checks under phony names/SS numbers. Yeah, they were working a full-time job AND collecting checks. How ya gonna turn them in? They were working for cash and I had no idea what their full names were. And how do they get those checks? Because gubmint offices are staffed by fellow Colombians and blacks who HELP THEM get these bogus checks by passing a few greenbacks under the table. Gubmint is gonna prosecute these people?! Gubmint is enabling them!! |
