"Bonin Islands" is the common name in English for Ogasawara Guntō, from the Japanese word bunin (an archaic reading of 無人 mujin), meaning "no people" or "uninhabited".

Oh, gack, I hadn't thought about that possibility...harhar, perhaps this is why the "...or something" part was louder in m'noggin than was anything else.

Since it began, I've certainly always thought that the Fukushima meltdown had the potential to, over time, be our ultimate undoing...a slow-acting ELE event.

Above all else, if anything it is worth worry and concern, it is that.

At any rate, deep-focus earthquakes are noted for releasing pressure, so until the big "we're totally fucked" becomes full on reality, perhaps these deep-focus earthquakes will do more to help, than to hinder.

Apparently, this quake really isn't being reported by the USGS - I don't see it on their map. Why exactly aren't they reporting quakes? School me.

This next week should be interesting to say the least. This is the deepest on record by 30 miles and it was felt across the world.
