Wow, if the data is correct this is the deepest quake ever measured (660 km 410 miles). It beats the 2013 Okhotsk quake by 51 km (31.6 miles).

interesting to know what "strong" quake followed this one in weeks or months

"Bonin Islands" is the common name in English for Ogasawara Guntō, from the Japanese word bunin (an archaic reading of 無人 mujin), meaning "no people" or "uninhabited".

Deep-focus earthquakes produce less aftershocks than shallow ones. Look in the links I've posted to see where this is said.
 Quoting: cosmicgypsy

no matter. the whole Pacific rim is going to keep rocking in the next few days.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 31965694

Well, the whole of the Pacific Rim has been rockin' for awhile now. The good news about deep-focus earthquakes is that they relieve pressure, so hopefully the earthquakes following won't be as major as they could've been...especially given that there has been two deep-focus ones.

And now I've been sitting here wondering what the earth's core is doing, if it's involved with this, if it has changed its rate of speed and/or temperature..or something.

hmm
 Quoting: cosmicgypsy

What effect does a nuclear core from Japan have on the earth's crust as it continues melting down to to the center of earth?

No one knows, it is plausible though.

 Quoting: c4g3

Oh, gack, I hadn't thought about that possibility...harhar, perhaps this is why the "...or something" part was louder in m'noggin than was anything else.

Since it began, I've certainly always thought that the Fukushima meltdown had the potential to, over time, be our ultimate undoing...a slow-acting ELE event.

Above all else, if anything it is worth worry and concern, it is that.

At any rate, deep-focus earthquakes are noted for releasing pressure, so until the big "we're totally fucked" becomes full on reality, perhaps these deep-focus earthquakes will do more to help, than to hinder.
You never change things by fighting the existing reality. To change something build a new model that makes the existing model obsolete. -Buckminster Fuller

The next places to watch will be Seattle/Vancouver and San Francisco. This one south of Japan was very deep and we had a 5.4 in Cali only 40 minutes later. We could see an 8.0 in the US by Monday.

I saw that 5.4 in Cali on the USGS map too! But now it's gone!!

All the news are reporting these quakes.

ABC7 is even reporting both the 4.8 and the 5.5 on Twitter.

Apparently, this quake really isn't being reported by the USGS - I don't see it on their map. Why exactly aren't they reporting quakes? School me.

tinfoileyes

This next week should be interesting to say the least. This is the deepest on record by 30 miles and it was felt across the world.

As Andre 3000 of Outkast would say,
"Shake it, sh sh, shake it, wuh oh"
