Regarding the comment about the weird lightning bugs, we caught one a few nights ago and were taking a real close look at it....looked different. Reminds me of this post a few days back: Thread: Wierd bugs this year I'm a little verklempt. Talk amongst yourselves. |

Have the lightning bugs been around every year, or have they been absent? Just wondering because for years I haven't heard anyone talk about them and I wondered if they were one of the species that died off. |

Have the lightning bugs been around every year, or have they been absent? Just wondering because for years I haven't heard anyone talk about them and I wondered if they were one of the species that died off. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 6969975 OP, I'm glad to hear they are still around! I'm from Illinois and now live in the PNW. I went back to Northern IL/Southern WI a few years ago for family and class reunions, and the lightning bugs were prolific that summer. AC from the NW, I wish we had them here, too! Do you see butterflies or dragonflies where you live? This is a strange year for bugs and birds, at least in my back yard. The only birds I am seeing now are starlings, crows, and blue jays. Oh, and occasionally, a hummingbird. The song birds were here early this spring. They usually go away while the starlings are nesting, but then they return after the starlings' young have fledged. They aren't back, yet. With the bugs, and I use that term broadly, I have not seen butterflies or dragonflies. Very few beetles and spittle bugs. Not too many flies, mosquitos, or gnats. There are some bees here, some that look different. Plenty of earwigs, cabbage moths, aphids, spider mites, snails and slugs, critters I don't necessarily welcome. I had an invasion of ants in the greenhouse a couple of months ago, and yellow jackets scouting out real estate, but they are few and far between now. I have spiders, but I wonder what they feed on with the lack of the other bugs. For the record, I don't use herbicides or pesticides, but my neighbors do. I have lots of flowers to attract the pollinators, and this is a record good year for flowers. I would like to hear from other gardeners what you are experiencing this year. |

The good news about living in a less buggy environment is, there are less critters chewing on my tomatoes and zucchinis! |

June bugs die off, lightening bugs come out. Still not many crickets, though. Everyone is worth knowing. Everything is worth learning. You're never too good. You're never not good enough. |
