Puerto Rico says it cannot pay its debt, setting off potential crisis in the U.S.
The governor of Puerto Rico has decided that the island cannot pay back more than $70 billion in debt, setting up an unprecedented financial crisis that could rock the municipal bond market and lead to higher borrowing costs for governments across the United States.

Puerto Rico’s move could roil financial markets already dealing with the turmoil of the renewed debt crisis in Greece. It also raises questions about the once-staid municipal bond market, which states and cities count on to pay upfront costs for public improvements such as roads, parks and hospitals.

For many years, those bonds were considered safe investments — but those assumptions have been shifting in recent years as a small but steady string of U.S. municipalities, including Detroit, as well as Stockton and Vallejo in California, have tumbled into bankruptcy.

Those of us in the financial realm have seen this coming for some time. This is going to shake the muni bond market and it will become apparent to the heretofore clueless that America is broke when we don't bail out PR dollar-for-dollar.

Who do they owe?

Aren't they a territory of the US?

Do they pay taxes?

Are the states the same?

Why would they owe so much?

Someone explain please.

And Greece--if they've received so much in bailouts, it means they weren't contributing anything unless they returned bailout money to pay the debt, but that doesn't work.

If they were bailed out, that money was gone and everything continued.
So now that they can't repay, what's the difference?
How does it suddenly affect everything?
Forgive the debt and continue on instead of destroying a country and it's people.

I don't get it because I don't spend a lot of time on world finance. Money issues don't interest me beyond having enough to pay bills, prep a little and buy food.
Seems like another game to me.

Haven't there been several predictions from psychics and people who had visions that Puerto Rico will get hit by that asteroid around Sept 23 - 24?

Puerto Rico
70,000,000,000 / 4,000,000 = 17,500 per person

Federal
17,000,000,000,000 / 320,000,000 = 53,125 per person

If Puerto Rico's debt per person was translated to a population size of the US total, the US debt would be 5.6 trillion, less than 1/3 of what it is.

4 million x 10 = 40 million x 8 = 320 million
70 billion x 10 = 700 billion x 8 = 5.6 trillion debt.

I got to thinking after reading the thread, about how the whole economic picture is extremely fragile and shaky at best. I know that there are numerous "safety triggers" and so forth...BUT, I can't help but feel that it's not going to take much to tip the scale...perhaps a few small nudges. I certainly don't believe in one grand shove, but again, I'm sensing several small catalysts on the doorstep. And I guess the most scary part is that I've heard/read several times, in several places, that the fed has no more magic up the sleeve either. Can't say I'm panicked, but I most certainly recommend everyone with eyes forward and "concentrate" on the big picture. Intelligence and good intuitive factors are valuable right now!!!

Well clearly one of us doesn't know what he's talking about. The IMF is an extra governmental UN type agency that does not print currency. It is supported by western governments and has a few desks and phones. But according to you, somehow they will backstop the world's debt.

i believe it did.

I went low on the debt amount and high on the population, which made the per person total lower.

18,000,000,000,000 / 312,000,000 = 57,692 and change.

if you search "average annual income usa" on google, it spits back that the average annual household income is 50,500 with an median per person annual income of 26,695.

2+ years of labor per person, or 1+ year of labor per household, and it still wouldn't pay the amount that DC fesses up to.

totally unpayable and disastrous.
