Screw the online hiring practices. Just ask to talk to the manager like you are an upset customer and then tell him you wanted to talk to him about getting a job. If he tells you that you need to fill out the online stuff, tell him ok, but I came to you, so be looking for my resume. Show em you have some moxy. Then do call backs to check on it. Make an impression and once you do get hired, make it stick by doing a damn good job.

Trick the Manager? Oooh, good idea, he'll love it!
 Quoting: KidCharlemagne

right lol

show the manager you are an obnoxious asshole, who likes to cause mischief

im sure he'll definitely hire you
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 50585702

How can you misperceive diligence, assertiveness, and will, as obnoxious asshole, and mischievous? What the fuck is wrong with you?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 69628699

Not to worry, I clarified my position on that later in the thread. The people commenting on that part are just too blind to read further.cool2

for fucks sake!!

even if you want to apply for an entry level no skilled job such as McDonald, host job at a restaurant, or working at a supermarket, it will take you 2 hours just to fill out a fucking application... almost 1 hours for the application and 1 hour for the stupid 100 questions personality test.. you have to send like 100's of these just to maybe, and i mean maybe get a call back...

what a fucking joke.

do you want to know the irony??? the same people who are making it harder for the younger generation to find jobs, are the same cocksuckers who are calling us "lazy"... thats right, the baby boomers who work in HR... fucking hypocrites.

here is how it went during their lifetime...

Timmy is a 18 year old baby boomer who just graduated from high school. Timmy now wants to find a job. Timmy applies at a office job that pays more than 3 times better than todays minimum wage job...

Timmy walks in and applies and is greeted by the hiring manager. Hiring manager says "do you have experience?". Timmy says, "no sir, i just graduated from high school and im a very quick learner!" Hiring manager says, "your hired!! come in tomorrow at 8 am". Timmy works two years at this job, and now has a brand hew house, car, and a wife. All paid off..

Now here is how is goes with our generation...

Josh is a 23 year old college graduate from a good school. He applied everywhere and cant find a job in his field. So he applies for a entry level job, no skilled job. Josh sends out over 100 resumes, and hundreds of hours filling out applications. Josh then received 1 fucking phone call for an interview for a job at a supermarket. Josh then goes to the interview and aced it. Unfortunately, he received a call back and they told him that they found someone else who "match the description better".... His baby boomer father (Timmy) then calls Josh a worthless piece of shit and kicks him out of the house... Josh is now homeless..

do you see whats wrong here??

I am 56 years old. I agree with you 100%! When I was your age, I could call an employment agency and get five job offers the same day. I could name my price. I could walk into any business, fill out a application, speak to a human resource recruiter and be hired on the spot! I am disgusted with the way your generation is being treated! You are smarter than our generation, and far more educated! It breaks my heart how you are being treated and BRAINWASHED. Do not vote for DEMOCRATS if you want a decent life for you and your family. Life has gone downhill under Obama. The pain he has caused will be reversed.flag waver

Ignorance is bliss. You won't know what this world doors to people now adays who need a job until the inflation screws all of your retirements and you need to choose between elderly suicide and saying hi to people who hate you at wal Mart. They even take a free life insurance policy on you at that age to cover you should you croak on the job. They can get money off of you!

Choose your words carefully. The world has changed drastically without you, and it wants only the skill you have to offer until you can't offer it anymore. Then the financial clock ticks ahead just in time to make miniscule the earnings of Your entire lifetime.

I told you this is a 50/50 bucket now - it really is -
(Something a politician would avoid talking about)

Because with strawman this and feeling bad, and low pay - and 2 roommates just to survive... More and more people are going on the dole.

Basically, I believe, we're becoming socialistic in nature due to the gap between wealthy and middle class.

Middle class just means "lots of credit" today.

So why not Rage against The Machine and say screw it and get the free money and food stamps.. (and never get laid)

Or get a job just to socialize? There's still plenty of good ole hand shake jobs via craigslist - and I know a few friends who made small companies with pool care and pressure cleaning.

Sooo yeah, I'm telling you, the scales are going to tip soon - and I wish I didn't know this so I could socialize with people.

Another thing though I've seen as a recruiter, common across generations, is job hopping.

These resume boards - a lot of people in recent years are hopping around from job to job and it does not look good to employers.

I see this with 20 year olds. I see this with 40-50 year olds - those who used to have long lasting positions, are jumping around now trying to find a fit.

Seeing someone stay at a job for at least a year nowadays is rare.

As shitty as your job might be, as shitty as your pay might be, I think an effort at KEEPING a job is important for getting a better job, better pay in the future. And atleast with keeping a job, you have better references and you don't have to go without a paycheck between jobs when you hop around...

Re: Getting a Job these days is a fucking joke!
tell me about it... the questions that REALLY pisses me off are these:

"why did you apply for this job"

"other than the money, why would you want to work here"

"does more money/ or a raise motivate employees?"

 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 67051295

Here's the one that gets me:

"Where do you see yourself five years from now? Ten years from now?"

If you've been out of work long enough, you can't 'see yourself' beyond your next meal, and your month's rent and electric bill.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 31839399

They used to ask questions like that 30 years ago too.

How you answer questions like "why do you want to work here?" and "where do you see yourself being 5-10 years from now?" will make or break your interview. These questions are designed to help them weed out undesirables.

Hint: "I want to work here for the money" and "I don't know where I see myself being in the future" are wrong answers.

You're supposed to study up on the company prior to the interview and act like it's the only company in the world for you, a place you've always dreamed of working. Then when they ask you questions like "why do you want to work here?", it will become evident that you did your homework and are a serious applicant.

Josh is an idiot.

He had no father to teach him a skill.

There were no skilled people in his village

to teach him anything.

There were no plants, fruits or trees

That he could tend. Everyone in his

Village was illiterate and they

Had no newspapers to deliver or cable television

To install.

The ground was so dry that there were no

Night crawlers to dig up and sell to fishermen.

The gravity was so strong Josh could

Not even get his ass off the couch to

Become a gigolo and sell his happy

Pants to mrs. Svenson.

Poor Josh...oh poor Josh

Totally on point and true. When your 20, you need to buckle down and suffer through the job you hate so much. You learn a lot when you're pushed beyond your comfort zone, which is actually what happens when a 20 year old gets a job. The whole vetting process and interview is a job itself. That young, you will likely fail many job interviews because you aren't prepared. Surviving the failure, brushing off the dust, and continuing is the golden egg.

While dining out one evening we overheard the manager interviewing a young man in his early 20's. Some of the manager's question were about as ridiculous as the questions in the video below.

I'm pretty sure the young man blew the interview when the manager asked what he would say was his worst quality and he said he couldn't stand to be touched. lol

 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 61868562

lol....Id have likely answered something like this;

Hmm...my worst quality? I guess I like to explore the reason behind things. Just for example, If I were to ask you the same question you just asked me, what would your answer be and why? Really though, I do have an earnest desire to understand how things work because in doing so, I am able to better accomplish what needs done that way.

But I digress, perhaps that really is not such a bad thing? because really that is how people learn, so actually what I thought was bad is actually beneficial.

Ok..ok...you got me...my worst quality is ironically turning negative into positives.....in a certain catty manner.

......at which point I would probably be thrown out on my ear....lol.

There were no skilled people in his village

to teach him anything.

There were no plants, fruits or trees

That he could tend. Everyone in his

Village was illiterate and they

Had no newspapers to deliver or cable television

To install.

The ground was so dry that there were no

Night crawlers to dig up and sell to fishermen.

The gravity was so strong Josh could

Not even get his ass off the couch to

Become a gigolo and sell his happy

Pants to mrs. Svenson.

Poor Josh...oh poor Josh

Poor Josh, blaming the environment. If his father wasn't there, there was someone else. There always is.

No plants, fruits, or tress? Lie.

Josh viewed the village as a whole, and couldn't see it's finer parts, that it wasn't all the same. Literacy was offered. Didn't Josh accept?

Newspapers or television? It's not the only avenue for reaching information, if you possess the intention of seeking.

More environment babble...

The gravity is also a lie. Josh is lying to himself.

Re: Getting a Job these days is a fucking joke!
this thread is full of mostly useless suggestions,

not everyone wants to live in North Dakota, and the person who is President aint gonna make a fuck of difference to someone sitting there with no job.

1. if you are young, ideally still in college. GO JOIN A FRATERNITY. right now!

you dont like the greek culture??? Too fuckin bad.

those people will SAVE your ass, and get you a job if you need one.

2. you are in the 25-35 age range, and in the OP's shoes, this is what i would do.

Start making phone calls. No not to harass random business about a job.

First, your friends, start calling all your friends, and find the person they know who is the most successful in the field you WANT to work in.

Call that person, say Hey My friend __________ is a mutual friend, can i buy you lunch, and discuss ___________ field. Make that person your best friend in the world.

Second, your family, same deal find your relative who is the most successful in the field you WANT to work in.

Same thing, call that person, ask to meet, and buy them lunch, to discuss ________ field.

Make that person your best friend in the world.

^ those 2 people should be enough to get you an entry level job somewhere.

3. Join a Fraternal Organization. Like the Freemasons.

Once you join, ask around who is the mot successful guy they know, locally, in the field you want to work. Get a hold of that guy, ask if you can buy him lunch to discuss this field.

This isnt the Olden Days though where they automatically will just be glad to meet and help you out, so this person might just tell you to buzz off , so you might have to do this with multiple guys.

If you are older, over 45. You are pretty well fucked. You can try those ideas, but after a certain age people dont want to help older people out,

i'd suggest trying to do some on line type of business.

Re: Getting a Job these days is a fucking joke!
The best thing young people can do these days is to learn a trade that everyone needs. Electrician or plumber is best.

They make great money, everyone always needs them and they can work for someone else or work for themselves.

College education is worthless anymore.

Re: Getting a Job these days is a fucking joke!

Corporations have been outsourcing our jobs to China and India for decades people!!!!!! Add manufacturing automation on top of that and WHALLAH! You have the shit show we have today. Stop trying to blame somebody.

The blame is with the politicians who passed the free trade laws when the world wasn't balanced economically.

They sold us out. Money whores. ALL of the wealthy countries are dying. China and India aren't exactly losing sleep over this.

The corps are getting their profits.........
AND they're getting HUGE bonuses for sending all of their work overseas and saving the "company" money.

No, the new generation of kids are NOT lazy, there are JUST NOT ENOUGH JOBS!

The population of the world has spilled over the breaking point now.

We need to bring manufacturing BACK to the U.S. consolidate, protectionism, heal.

All of the country's of the world are REELING right now from the lack of foresight, corporate bought, politicians brought on us!
