And they do this just as much in NZ as here. In fact the yanks whining about this is absurd as the US has way more feral cats and way more guns to shoot them. Its like a family pass time over there. |

Quoting: Bluebird This is barbaric! . Spay and neuter over 2 million feral cats ? LoL and I suppose you want Aussie taxpayers to pay for this crap?? But they would still have to live out their lives destroying the native species. You can not make them tame its impossible they are not just strays. |

The apparently cuddly pets prey on a number of declining and endangered species, including water voles and dormice, said the Mammal Society. The survey, called Look What the Cat Brought in, found that the average household cat caught or killed between 30 and 40 creatures a year. [link to www.dailymail.co.uk] |

Now, the rat population is small, the cat population is huge. Quoting: Flying Elvii When they cull the cats, the rat population will explode again. Cats were not "introduced" this is nonsense. They are wild domestic cats kittens who were born in the wild from stray cats. That had to fend for themselves and became wild, and bred a new kind of wild cat. |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 69481369 United States 07/17/2015 04:08 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | This is how the problem got started: MELBOURNE (AP) Glorious Opportunity To Get Rich!!! — We are starting a cat ranch in Australia with 100,000 cats. Each cat will average 12 kittens a year. The cat skins will sell for 30 cents each. One hundred men can skin 5,000 cats a day. We figure a daily net profit of over $10,000. Now what shall we feed the cats? We will start a rat farm next door with 1,000,000 rats. The rats breed 12 times faster than the cats. So we will have four rats to feed each day to each cat. Now what shall we feed the rats? We will feed the rats the carcasses of the cats after they have been skinned. Now Get This! We feed the rats to the cats and the cats to the rats and get the cat skins for nothing! |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 11726642 Actually there is. They're feral cats, an invasive species, and they're decimating the native wildlife. The gov aren't saying they're gonna kill people's pets, just the wild ones. I mean 2 million is a lot of cats, but I have a feeling there's far more than 2 million feral cats in Aus. |

Agreed and yes very true. They are not only out in the country areas but going wild and breeding in the cities too. They seem to love the industrial areas. There are heaps around those areas. Might help keep the vermin population down there but they devastate the wildlife. |
