Re: I worked in a maximum security prison in one of the most deadly cities in America...Ask away.
Is requesting a pin against the rules? I'm a noob and don't know the ins and out of this establishment.

Well, for the past few days I have been really thinking about the idea of writing a book (frankly because the thought of working for someone else literally makes me feel ill). I have been researching what it takes, how to do it, how to format it and so on.

I am college educated, extremely level headed, I can write well and for some reason can tell a story in a very simplistic like manner. I always remember struggling to read books throughout my life because the books I chose were hard to understand or I just couldn't relate to the writers. I got sick of seeing words that didn't look familiar. Reading certain books seemed like a chore. Can't people just tell a damn story in simple terms? Whatever. I made it through college without buying books (mainly because I had no money, nor wanted to spend it). I took notes in college classes, actually listened to my professors and researched things on the internet when I needed extra information about a topic.

Very serious question here...If I was to publish a book by the end of the year, could anyone here actually say they would buy it? From lurking around other threads, I know many members aren't too serious on GLP, but a little seriousness would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you stranger friends!

Well folks, I have taken EVERY SINGLE LEGIT question from these 23 pages and placed them into a file on my computer.

I have decided that I am going to write a book. Congrats to all of you who asked a sincere question that made sense, because that question is going to be incorporated into my book.

Now, I have absolutely no idea on how long I want the book to be, BUT, if anyone wants their question in the book....THE FLOOR IS OPEN. ASK AWAY. YOUR QUESTION/QUESTIONS will be answered. If you want a question answered, I would suggest reading/browsing through the thread from start to finish to make sure your question hasn't already been asked and answered.

Pin for more questions if possible. Don't worry...Copies will be extremely affordable. Thinking only a few bucks per book.

Re: I worked in a maximum security prison in one of the most deadly cities in America...Ask away.
OP, just wondered. Are there prisons where inmates work farming and creating the food they eat?

I don't think soy is so good for people.

Do you think making inmates work, like in a field and so on, would keep them from getting bored and tire them out?

I think the kitchens should not be maintained by inmates due to what everyone is saying (spitting, peeing in food, etc.); hiring some decent cooks would be a good start.

Do inmates enjoy their academic classes?

Did you think the priest, rabbis, ministers and imam actually did any good at all? or do you think they (inmates) were harmed?

For inmates with no money, nothing; couldn't they earn some 'book' by helping trusties? By being trusties?

DID BRUTUS MAKE RAFAEL HIS JAIL CELL BITCH???????/!bananasex
 Quoting: STONER 49675507

Uhmm...Not really. The inmates would fight over the gicci though. A gicci is a prison term for an inmate that is legally a male, but has just about every characteristic of a female minus the genitalia.

Many inmates got their hands on porn. Inmate gets on pay phone---> tells gang leader to put $50 in guard's paypal account---> Guard brings contraband. Easy.

I have to admit, this was/is a great thread. I suggest the book writing, as I suspect you would write it in fairly short order. Find a decent editor to help you with any difficult spots you encounter. Have the editor send out a few chapters to the publisher for interest and see what happens. I suspect you and the book will get published.

Re: I worked in a maximum security prison in one of the most deadly cities in America...Ask away.
Great discussion, OP. Thanks for your insight.

How different do you think the prison-industrial complex would be if drugs were legalized?
 Quoting: Factual Error

If drugs were legal, that would save a lot of time for criminals to commit other crimes. It would leave open time for violent stuff. Gang shootings, fighting, arson, stealing cars and stealing money.

Think about it like this...If drugs became legal, how would poor black/poor hispanic inner-city families obtain income? I am by no means trying to be/sound like a bigot, but that is a very serious question. If they couldn't get money from drugs because Joe Smoe can buy crack at the 7/11, they would need to find another way to make it. Stealing/theft/robbery would be so much worse.

Also, if drugs were legal, imagine all the 15-29 year old gangsters "higher" (and I say higher, because they are probably usually high) off drugs running around the streets with mixed combinations of speed, MDMA and weed. That would cause them to hate white cops even more.

So to answer your question; how would it relate to prison if they were legal? There would be a higher rate of other crimes. Simple as that.
 Quoting: nd5ip3pomu

I like this thread OP. I have a story, but I'm not gonna share it here until after my particular situation is over and done.

If you take and make drugs, legal, then then the drug attacks have a harder time to get it. yeah, harder. They will then attack and rob the ones who are LEGALLY receiving their medication to sell it to somebody who will profit somehow.

Constantly loud. Everything echos really bad. Inmates far away from each other would scream to get their message heard.

Many inmates put on their shoes and kicked the doors...It was just something they did to burn energy, make noise and piss us off.

Some inmates had radios too....

A very large amount of noise from all different sources.

Are you as glad as I am that you stopped doing that for a living?

I have no clue how cops/wardens/judges can bear to ruin folks lives for a living, stripping away their human rights by the hour, tearing families apart, when you don't even have a clue if they REALLY are guilty of anything most times. Detachment, perhaps? It'd haunt me to the grave, personally.

We see a lot of US reality prison shows here, seems people get locked up for pretty minor drug possession etc.

Do you think there's a bit of an... "industry" in locking people up?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1553296

It is in America, all the jails/prisons are owned by private corporations, no longer ran by local & regional governments. The cities that have them, have contracts to get a 98% fill rate.

What makes you say that....Because after working many years in a prison, I would disagree with being owned by private corps.

As for being an industry....It does operate as a business in many aspects.

10. They are handled normally. Business is business until your ass in out. They say their goodbyes to inmates. Some said bye to me. I personally had one thank me for everything. He said I took care of him better than anyone in the outside world ever did. Good guy. He was sad to leave us. He almost had tears. Was a good cleaner and good detail. He was shot about a week after he was released.

That's a sad story . . . .
 Quoting: Vision Thing

My son was acting Captain at a local prison when he was killed as he was out running.

The day of his funeral the prison did last call for him. The guards and all but one inmate were openly sobbing.

Was he tough on them? Yes, yes he was, but he was also fair. In fact when he had garden detail a plot to kill him was stopped by other inmates.

His enemy came from inside the prison but not by the inmates. It came from one of his own men, one who wanted the Captains position, the one who my son had written up the day before. That was the man that hit my son, ran off the road and hit my son.
