12 gauge ammo is easily gotten in western countries, whereas AK or M16 ammo would be a bit tougher. And those rifles would be obvious that someone rich and evil supplied them.

We should also take into account how armed the citizens of the countries that are being invaded are. Against a poorly armed populace, enemies armed with shotguns may as well be armed with M-60s.

Shotguns do not require training to be effective. Easy to load, easy to operate, little to no maintenance required for their intended purposes. They require no particular amount of skill to be devastating at close range. Ammo is cheap, plentiful.

Once it goes hot, we can bet that containers of AKs, M4s, RPGs, etc will be supplied for those poor "refugees".
