Less talk, more action: Russian jets destroy ISIS HQs, tanks, munition depots – all in just 1 week

Published time: 7 Oct, 2015 16:22

It’s been a tough week for terrorists in Syria. Over seven days Russia delivered over a hundred airstrikes at various jihadist facilities across the country, reportedly igniting panic among some groups.

Russian anti-terror op in Syria

According to a weekly roundup by the Russian Defense Ministry, the country’s contingent in Syria has launched some 120 combat sorties over the week, hitting over 110 targets. The bombing destroyed over 71 pieces of armor, about 30 other vehicles, several artillery pieces, 19 command facilities, two communication centers, 23 depots with fuel and ammunition, six plants used to make IEDs, including car bombs, and several training camps.

Terrorists on the run
The apparent goal of this phase of the operation is to undermine the militants’ capability to keep the pressure on government forces through constant raids and terrorist attacks, and to give the Syrian Army a breathing space to regroup and launch an offensive.

The targets of the Russian airstrikes were spread across Syria, from ISIS stronghold Raqqa in the northeast to the vicinity of the ancient city of Palmyra west of the Damascus-controlled western part of the country to the outskirts of Damascus in the south.

According to the Russian military, the bombing campaign has hurt the morale of the militant troops, sending thousands on the run.

Top Guns
Russia’s fleet of jets is varied as well. The core of it consists of well-tried workhorses like the Su-24 frontline bomber and the armored Su-25 ground-support fighter jet. Both planes were designed decades ago, although the Air Force brought the latest upgraded versions for the Syrian campaign.

Newer planes are also there, like the Su-34, which entered service in Russia last year. The Syrian theater offers Russian engineers a test-field to try the plane, which can hit targets from an altitude of 5,000 feet, far from the range of anti-aircraft weapons in the possession of the militants.

The Air Force is employing a number of bombs in the missions, from sophisticated and expensive laser-guided Kh-25Ls and steerable KAB-250s to the bunker-busting BETAB-500s free-falling and affordable FAB-500s. The variety means Russia can strike with pinpoint precision where necessary and bombard with devastating force where no collateral damage would be done.

Mission control
Russia’s Syrian mission flies from a hastily reconstructed airbase south of Latakia. Just a couple of months ago it was an abandoned airfield, but now it sends dozens of sorties daily and hosts not only some of the most high-tech fighter jets on the planet, but also serves as a home for Russian combat pilots, technicians and support troops. Syrian soldiers and officers are at the base to help coordinate the war effort.

EXCLUSIVE: Man who runs SOHR admits to RT he last visited Syria 15 years ago

Published time: 6 Oct, 2015 19:27

The UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights has been feeding news about the Syrian war to many media outlets, claiming to have a wide network of contacts on the ground. RT caught up with its director to find out how trustworthy those sources are.

Recently RT went to investigate what makes SOHR so popular with the mainstream media. Journalist and prankster Nimrod Kamer, who volunteered to help find out the answer, travelled to the Midlands to see the headquarters of the Observatory and speak to its director.

Kamer had no luck catching Rami Abdulrahman at home, however. Calling him on the phone, he found out the man went out to a shop. The director of the Observatory sounded very distressed on the phone, talking about the dangers of meeting up for daytime interviews because “they are trying to kill me.”

Soon after RT found out that Abdulrahman was headed to Kazakhstan, although no further details were clear. But tracing the steps of the Syrian opposition was a big help. They got together for a conference in one of the Kazakh capital's lavish spots. The head of the SOHR also attended the conference, and, after a bit of wrangling, agreed to answer a couple of questions from RT.

"We are under attack simply because we tell the truth what's going on in Syria. Apparently nobody wants to hear the truth," Abdulrahman told RT’s Ilya Petrenko.

The organization claims to have a wide network of contacts in the region who feed their information to the head office, where it is processed and then posted on the SOHR website, Facebook and Twitter accounts.

RT asked Abdulrahman whether he personally knows "hundreds of people," as he himself puts it, working in Syria for SOHR, and whether he can really trust all of them.

"I know all of the activists working for the SOHR," he replied.

When RT wondered when the last time Abdulrahman actually went to Syria was, he said it was 15 years ago.

"But I know some of the Observatory activists through common friends. This organization only takes new members following a six-month trial period and the candidate has to be familiar to someone from the organization or to a reliable outside contact," he said.

I think that would be less than nothing; negative something. When I saw the news conference on the hospital bombing, with them "admitting" it was an "accident" I became enraged and was enraged all day.

For the first time in my life, I felt a sense of disgust being an American. Then I got flashes of all the dollar cheap o stores, and all the CRAP out there nobody needs, the lies, I find it very difficult to enjoy much of anything. They have the hate so ramped up in contrast with continually hearing about Kardashians it's obviously intentional to drive people mad.

These demons unleash and feed off this chaos. The entire world is ruled by a Dominant/Submissive, Sadomasochistic fetish, that's what it all comes down to. Some pervert uses us for a chess board game.

The POS Obama knew those ISIS HQs were there but left them standing after one year of fake bombing runs. This is why so many Americans believe he is aiding and abetting the ISIS enemy.

I was in A10s for years, they are currently all overflown and on extensions. The airframe would literally need to be re-engineered with new engines. They have already rewinged them years ago. The airframe has withstood a lot of stress from the gun. The best solution would be to remake the bird - but that's not likely to happen.
