SACRAMENTO, CALIFORNIA - In support of small farmers and consumers the California Grange will sponsor Seed Freedom Day on July 1, 2015.

Seed Freedom Day will celebrate our agricultural heritage and raise objections to an amendment to California’s “Seed Law”, enacted by state legislators last August.

California Assembly Bill 2470 (AB2470) is bad law that seriously impairs the right of farmers to share and sell their seeds, gives the Secretary of Agriculture authority to decide what can and cannot be grown in California counties and cities, and gives corporations the same legal rights and protections as people.

“Farmers and consumers should be angry. AB2470 is dangerous law,” warns California Grange President Bob McFarland.

AB 2470, Salas. California Seed Law.
Existing law, the California Seed Law, regulates seed sold in California, and requires each container of agricultural seed that is for sale or sold within this state for sowing purposes to be labeled, as specified, unless the sale is an occasional sale of seed grain by the producer of the seed grain to his neighbor for use by the purchaser within the county of production. Existing law defines “person” for purposes of the California Seed Law to mean an individual, partnership, trust association, cooperative association, or any other business unit or organization.
This bill would clarify that definition of “person” to include corporations. The bill would also clarify the term “neighbor” for purposes of the labeling requirements specified above to mean a person who lives in close proximity, not to exceed 3 miles, to another. The bill would revise a statement of legislative intent to include ensuring that the amount of seed represented on a tag or label is properly identified.
Existing law authorizes the Secretary of Food and Agriculture, by regulation, to adopt a list of plants and crops that the secretary finds are or may be grown in this state from agricultural or vegetable seed.
This bill would instead authorize the secretary, by regulation, to adopt a list of plants and crops that the secretary finds are or may be grown in this state. The bill would also prohibit a city, county, or district, including a charter city or county, from adopting or enforcing an ordinance on or after January 1, 2015, that regulates plants, crops, or seeds without the consent of the secretary. The bill would make other nonsubstantive changes.

The state senate currently consists of 26 Democrats and 14 Republicans, and the Assembly consists of 52 Democrats and 28 Republicans. Except for the period from 1995 to 1996, the Assembly has been in Democratic hands since the 1970 election (even while the governor's office has gone back and forth between Republicans and Democrats). The Senate has been in Democratic hands continuously since 1970.

Looking at Google it seems this was signed into law last year. So far, it doesn't interfere with locally passed anti GMO laws but it sure does target ordinary farmers on being able to trade and sell seeds.

It will be enforced, believe me.

About 20 years ago or so before "Terminator" genes were put into the mix they were going after farmers who were holding back some of their patented soybeans after harvest to plant the next year. They have their own security type agents that will find you and take you to court.

there are more than a few states that have been doing this for a very long time with codes, rules and standards set by BS regulatory agencies including cali for a long time..no one cared because it was only dumb farmers being fucked..they didn't care for so long the legislators were emboldened enough to make it law of the whole state...and it just coincidentally comes when there is sea change of people trying to go back to nature and provide for themselves..and as I mentioned..the story of the very few seeders unions or collectives is very telling research and it goes back along ways for any who care to know that it aint just big corporate ag doing this

Not new.. Monsanto forces people to use their seeds.. If you get a farm loan and don't, they can comfiscate your farm. That's why they're gmo'd not because of nutrients, or bug resistant.. So they can test if the plants are theirs. .. This has spread to other countries as well, it's one of the most corrupt businesses on the plant.

Sounds like an opportunity to start a commerce chain. Everyone who is interested plays middle man with a 3 miles radius.

now it's seeds - most people I know bought one set of organic heirloom seeds and just keep harvesting the seeds from the bounty produced - trade them with friends and neighbors -

you see around here the grocery store fruits and veggies all taste like they've been sitting on a frozen truck for days and then they are way overpriced at that ...

everyone grows there own - lives self sufficient
now the frozen shipped in food will be controlled by hybrid seeds full of chemicals -

I think California just made growing your own food and harvesting the seeds the new in thing to do ...

They will send people out to farms around the farmers who purchases their seeds to their neighbors farms who won't, take samples of said produce after pollination and seeding growth has occurred, where there's no doubt theres been some cross pollination due to the farms being so close and and charge the farmers with theft and all kinds of patent violations and just plain evil liberal shit, have the farmers tried and jailed, clean out their bank accounts, and ultimately end up with the farmers farm due to the outrageous and draconian fines just so they can get another farm on the Corporate roster and keep all that natural unmodified produce out of the grocery store that's so bad for you.
