The chemical not only kills the coral, it causes DNA damage in adults and deforms the DNA in coral in the larval stage, making it unlikely they can develop properly. The highest concentrations of oxybenzone were found in reefs most popular with tourists. The team's findings are published in Oct. 20 edition of the journal Archives of Environmental Contamination and Toxicology. |

Hawaii is in the line of Fukushima and the Carribean gets high levels of pesticides from banana and pineapple plantations, sugar cane and other fruit producers. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 70567049 Yeah but I personally don't want to be dumping anything toxic when I'm in the ocean. :joyfishes: |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 70193157 Australia 10/21/2015 05:40 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I've been saying for years that sunscreen is the reason for the increase in melanoma diagnoses. If certain ingredients "alter DNA" in humans, then that's what contributes to cancer. I'm not saying go bake in the sun, but look for organic sunscreen containing mostly zinc. Also, the lack of sunshine causes rickets. Guess what disease is making a comeback? You guessed it, rickets. People need to think more for themselves instead of believing whatever the "cure/prevention" of the month is. Look at the new guidelines for breast cancer screenings. That will tell you all you need to know. |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 67046660 United States 10/21/2015 05:46 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | The mere fact that this comes out in a liberal journal of questionable scientific validity calls the study itself into question. The fact that it is only published in a liberal journal of questionable scientific validity, as opposed to more mainstream, peer reviewed journals on chemistry and oceanography likely means the study is bullshit. It would be useful to peel back the layers on this. Somewhere.... someone is either not dancing to the environmentalist tune, or did not contribute to the right cause, or even a woman scorned, which has led to this onslaught. SOMEWHERE, money, or the lack of it, is involved. Liberals never do anything for free. This includes abortions and the selling of baby parts for $$$. 1000:1 we start seeing efforts to restrict tourist activity, or perhaps force a change in the chemicals used in sunscreen. |

Ha ha. How dumb can you be. Sun is GOOD for you. That's right. If you're afraid of burning then where a long sleeve shirt or limit your exposure. But at the very least you should try to get an hour or two of good old strong sunlight on your full body once a week. Remember that lady who almost killed her son with sunscreen? Windows They block the vitamin D uv but allows the damaging form Inside workers get melanoma But outside workers don't |

The shit they tell us to slather on our skin to PREVENT DNA damage / cancer from the sun actually CAUSES cancer?? And, to think that many schools require children to wear sunscreen..... Ugh, humans are such idiots sometimes. I am sorry for our stupidity, coral reefs. :( |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 45001580 United States 10/21/2015 06:17 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Sun is good for you? OMGPHM I am a redhead. I should have never been in the sun without protection, and they didn't have a sunscreen greater than 8 in the 70s. You cant undo sun damage, or look like you might have if you had never been in the sun as much as I was. Most sun damage happens before 24 anyway, but any fair haired person should NEVER EVER TAN and why people think a tan is sexy I have zero idea, I think tans are ugly. I plan and regulate my life in accordance with how sunny it is. I do out door swimming before 10 am or after 3 pm. Generally I just don't go out in direct sun, or coverup if I have to. If you live in the Southern hemisphere it's much worse, you can see how wrinkled and aged people from Australia often are at a young age. I have been using the dry feel 100% spray sunscreen for about 5 years now, always on an exposed upper body; face, arms, chest, neck, etc. Don't forget the top of your feet if you wear sandals. Zinc oxide only gives limited protection and washes off. Everything in life is a toss up, what do you do? Die of Cancer from the Sun, or from the Sunscreen? I l'll take my chances on the sunscreen I despise the way I look with any tan. As far as swimming any reefs I intend to do that with a wetsuit on if I ever get the chance. Your'e not catching my fat ass in a swimsuit around razor sharp coral no f-ing way. I'll be completely covered up and have sunscreen on my face only. Oh no wait they have face masks to. |

Just like the bullshit gluten industry. The fact that people are advising others to go outside without sunscreen scares me. My grandfather and Aunt both had cancer cut from their faces because of exposure to the sun WITHOUT SUNSCREEN. Please people... don't take any kind of medical/health advice from this forum. Also they are a huge carbon sink as their skeletons are made up of calcium carbonate. Did you know that the coral reefs are the rain forest of the oceans being the second most diverse habitat in regards to the number of species? Reef Aquariums are way cool also...
