Every landing after Apollo 11 WAS filmed in color. The camera for 11 was a late addition. You did know there was more than one landing, right?

I shudder to being up the idea of the Moon's MASCONs...but NASA was up on those as well...

How big would the lens have to be to see evidence in a clear resolution of a moon landing from earth?

Maybe that is because you're not a peak-of-the-Cold-War American.

You not knowing or understanding other people's motivations tells us only something about you, not about other people.


That question should have come first.

The Cold War, and the threat of Global Thermonuclear War, was very much an existential crisis.
Demonstrating that the US had superior technology, science, organisation, and industry, was very much a national priority.

Remember Sputnik?
Being able to shoot something that size into orbit (with an ICBM-derivative no less) meant that the USSR had the capability to nuke American cities by uninterceptable means.
The Yanks freaked out, they realised that there was a very important strategic technology in which they were actually lagging behind the enemy.
Thus the Space Race was born.
Apollo purpose was to focus the effort in the shape of a national priority programme, it had a number of specific political objectives:
- Re-affirm the US as the world's leading power, in the world's eyes as well as in the American public's eyes. The Cold War was as much about image as it was about weapons.
- Boost the high-tech industry's capabilities and technology to new unprecedented levels.
- Inspire a new generation into becoming scientist and engineers so the US would be able to stay on the technological forefront for many decades to come.
- To stimulate the economy. Modern armies are expensive, they require a big tax base.

If Kennedy's and LBJ's big egos hadn't gotten them into the South-East Asia mess it would have been an unqualified success.
Without the Cold War and nuclear weapons something like Apollo might still not have happened.


Pray tell, what technologies were not up to the task of landing human beings on the Moon?
