How did you come up with only 4 " ? I work in the District, and live in the suburbs, about 25 miles out. The snow started falling at our place at about 1:00 p.m. on Friday afternoon, and ended about 7:30 p.m. Saturday night. We have, I'd estimate, about 35 inches here. I started to clear my driveway today, even as the snow was still coming down and the wind was blowing at 35 mph. I didn't get too far; the first task was to clear the five foot high drift that was up against my garage door. The "official" snowfall reading for the District was some 17.8 inches, but it is being reported as of this evening that this is almost certainly erroneous -- too low -- and due to a measurement error. As it is, the District's "official" weather station is at Reagan National Airport, which isn't even in the District. It's in Virginia. It has long been a source of contention, with locals feeling that the measurements (both temperature and precipitation) from the airport station are invariably off. Local weather reports in the late afternoon here were reporting amounts as much as 23-inches+ in Northwest Washington. Trust me. The Washington metro area got hammered. If the OP doesn't believe me, he should feel free to come over and shovel out my driveway tomorrow. He should arrive early. |
