The junked vehicles I've target practiced with showed little ballistic protection from any direction except the engine compartment.

9mm slides right through a car door, 50/50 it will get out the other side.

Haven't tried the gay 5.56 NATO round, but my guess is it penetrates one side and flys apart before hitting the opposite wall of the vehicle. But I could be wrong.

.30 caliber will most definitely slide through a vehicle and could even pierce the engine block. 0.50 BMG - nothing hides from that.

Don't forget there was the probably use of rubber bullets and beanbags. These would be used to possibly draw fire from inside the vehicle. Again, a way to justify the ends. Also, they were already shot at when they initially stopped the truck! It was a planned hit!

The pickup truck was up to the headlights in snow. That means people laying on the floor were a few inches below the snow line.

Finally got curious and did a search for bullet ballistics in snow. My perception is that bullets traveling at a low angle to the snow would be refracted upward and out of the snow.

Bullet traveling at a more acute angle would likely stop within a few inches - depending on bullet design and weight.

Abstract : The purpose of this work was to investigate the behavior of small arms ammunition in snow under laboratory conditions. Knowledeg of this behavior will lead to more efficient design of expedient field fortifications using snow as the primary construction material. Three types of ammunition, the M193, M80, and M43, were tested. Round were fired into snow targets of various thickness up to that thickness required to fully stop the projectiles. The maximum penetrations for the three rounds tested were 0.70m, 1.26m and 1.06m respectively. Velocity loss as a function of target thickness was determined by measuring projectile velocity before and after impact of the projectile with the target. The velocity-loss-versus-thickness data showed a sigmoid shape common to the three types of rounds. The impact and exit yaw angles of the M193 rounds were estimated. Scatter in the test data was attributed, in part, to random variations in the impact yaw angle. The penetration required for a 90 dge yaw was determined by the exit yaw measurements. This was shown to correspond to the inflection point of the velocity-loss-versus-penetration curve. This point is potentially significant in the design of composite fortifications. Discussions deal with basic concepts and definitions, the occurrence and significance of projectile tumbling and the use of laboratory tests for small arms evaluation in snow targets. The validity of the methodology used was established by testing M193 rounds in gelatin targets. These results compared favorably with similar test results in the literature. (Author)

I'm crying again, but I'm also mad as hell. Didn't realize how mad I was until I called one of my senators. I started talking and by the time I was done, I was shaking with rage. I recommend everyone calling their congressmen. I also called Senator Jeff Sessions. He's the chair of the subcommittee of the Constitution. I can't go to Oregon right now, but I'm trying to make my voice heard. Please do the same if you feel strongly about this. They are violating the civil rights of these men and women!
