Mexico defeated Texas at the alamo and if I recall correctly they still got their independence. America swallowed texas soon after without firing a shot. See the difference? Also USA took the 2 richest provinces of Mexico from them in war. If Mexico still had control of Nevada and California they might be the rich ones right now |

The rebellion was actually headed up by two Mexican counties in Texas territory that revolted against Santa Ana violating the Mexican constitution and creating a centrist military regime to re-bolster Spanish nobility interests. Fact is, Santa Ana was never on the side of the Mexican rebels. He always fought for Spanish nobility and especially Papist interests. |

As I sit here typing with Starbucks house blend on desk and contemplate it all, we did in fact suffer a loss in that border skirmish. Exactly. I'd rather be real and rejected than fake and accepted. If Mexico still had control of Nevada and California they might be the rich ones right now Mexico has the natural resources to provide a living standard of Canada, but the government isn't interested in providing for their citizens. The south west belonged to Spain, not Mexico. Spain's claim was only theoretical, not in practice. The land had a low carrying capacity and was filled with Native Americans that prevent the Spanish from establishing a large presence. There were only a few thousand Spaniards living in the southern part of Texas and few thousand living in southern part of California. |

Those areas, where desolate under the Mexican's. They had control, on paper only. It was American's, that domesticated the Tribes living there, and developed the resources that turned those regions into wealth generators. It is like blacks looking at the white farmers of Rhodesia and being like, with tears in their eye's "they stole our most fertile land". Then after driving the white farmers out, well, the rest is history. |

Despite Sam Houston's lack of ability to maintain strict control of the Texian Army, they defeated Santa Anna's much larger army at the Battle of San Jacinto on 21 April 1836. The Texans shouted, "Remember Goliad, Remember the Alamo!" The day after the battle, a small Texan force led by James Austin Sylvester captured Santa Anna. They found the general dressed in a dragoon private's uniform and hiding in a marsh. ... Acting Texas president David G. Burnet and López de Santa Anna signed the Treaties of Velasco, stating that "in his official character as chief of the Mexican nation, he acknowledged the full, entire, and perfect Independence of the Republic of Texas." In exchange, Burnet and the Texas government guaranteed Santa Anna's safety and transport to Veracruz. In Mexico City, however, a new government declared that Santa Anna was no longer president and that the treaty he made with Texas was null and void. While captive in Texas, Joel Roberts Poinsett — U.S. minister to Mexico in 1824 — offered a harsh assessment of General Santa Anna's situation: Say to General Santa Anna that when I remember how ardent an advocate he was of liberty ten years ago, I have no sympathy for him now, that he has gotten what he deserves. Santa Anna replied: Say to Mr. Poinsett that it is very true that I threw up my cap for liberty with great ardor, and perfect sincerity, but very soon found the folly of it. A hundred years to come my people will not be fit for liberty. They do not know what it is, unenlightened as they are, and under the influence of a Catholic clergy, a despotism is the proper government for them, but there is no reason why it should not be a wise and virtuous one. ... In 1846, Mexican troops crossed the Rio Grande into the disputed Nueces Strip, hoping to regain Texas; the United States then declared war on Mexico, hoping to extinguish the weak Mexican land claims to western Indian lands that Mexico had inherited from the Spanish. -------------------------------------------------- Here we are, 170 years later... and Texas is full of fucking Mexicans... |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 33689138 United States 02/11/2016 05:51 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Texas won Independence from Mexico in 1836 after laying waste to the Mexican army at San Jacinto. Afterwards Texas was it's own nation until 1845 when annexed by the United States. This occurred around the same time that the United States was in a war with Mexico again. This time the United States took territory all the way to Mexico City and occupied it. They gave most of the territory back after a peace treaty was signed. The United States could have just kept all of Mexico and taken it but they did not. |

The ones who lost a third of their army to defeat a force less than 1/12 its size, or for those who held to the last man and left an inspiring story and cautionary tale that has persisted for nearly 200 years?
