So wouldn't it be ok for them to eat a severely mentally challenged calf or something?

Since plants don't portray pain like mammals, vegans are alright with butchering them.

I just don't understand vegan mentality, if they only knew?

Plants do feel pain, they do bleed, they are living things just like us.

Makes no difference if you kill a cow or a plant in all honesty, we just get choked because we can relate to a cows pain more then a plant.

If vegans are so in touch with mother nature, they should be able to see that plants do bleed and feel pain and die.

If a possible food source can run away from you if you attempt to kill
And eat it, is the line most vegans won't cross when it comes to eating higher Intelligent food sources.

Lots of Vegetarians and Vegans eat mushrooms... Mushrooms are very closely related to animals, cladistically they are 1st cousins, they have also been shown to be able to problem solve.

Vegans and Vegetarians should swear them off as well.

I believe the philosophy behind it, is they don't want creatures to suffer for their nutritional needs.

I´d rather be vagan than eating Halal from New Zealand, which is lying on the shelves here!
Since I saw a doc how they treat sheep there I alreay stopped eating their meat.

Halal meat I will never eat.
I eat mostly seafood, which is only poisoned old skool.

So following your logic, it should be "ok" to to eat a mentally disabled human being, since they don't understand anything anyway. Seriously? Do you know how ignorant and silly you sound in your statements? Not to mention-judgemental of a lifestyle you seem to know absolutely nothing about. As far as plants "feeling pain"...another ignorant statement. In order for a living organism to feel pain, it would require a nervous system connected to a brain. Did you watch a hoax youtube video where they "test" plants on whether or not they feel? Sorry to disappoint you but many things on the internet are hoaxes and you should really check their sources next time. Same as some videos showing that soy is apparantly harmful, those videos are produced by a meat sponsoring company. I could go on and on and on but what is the point? You seem to lack a basic brain to understand simple things. Wait, maybe it would be ok to eat you?

I am not a vegetarian or a vegan, but I completely see the reasons for their decisions.

Some do it for health. You don't have to agree, but most nutritionists know that meat is unhealthy. It sits in your stomach and ferments, and makes your body very acidic. Protein from beans and nuts and soy products are MUCH better for you.

And then some do it for the morality reasons. They have learned how the places that raise animals that most people eat, are treated. The environment they are exposed to their entire life.

Not ALL animals you buy are raised in such horrific places. If you are willing to dish out the extra money you can go to places like Whole Foods and get "grass fed" beef and chicken. Or "free range" chickens.

And even better you can go to local farmers markets and get meat from the small running farms themselves.

But almost ALL of the animal meat Americans consume are from animals that are basically being tortured their entire life. Cows raised for beef are usually held in the thousands, shoulder to shoulder, sitting in each others feces. And even if the conditions are a little better, they still will never have room to walk around and eat grass like a cow should. If they did, they would sell the meat for more and label it so. They are fed corn. Corn causes 90% more ecoli in the stomach, so the meat has to be treated differently. For example meat from the Mcdonanlds farms all have to be run through ammonia to kill the ecoli, and then dyed again because that process turns it grey.

[link to www.familygonehealthy.com]

And then the chickens. Most of the time they are kept in cages their entire life. They never know what it is like to walk around. Their entire life they are in a state of misery, trapped.

[link to blog.farmsanctuary.org]

And the ones that aren't in cages are also shoulder and to shoulder.

[link to media.guim.co.uk (secure)]

They are bred and fed with hormones for certain attributes. For examples to cause the breasts to be huge and so that a lot of times they cant walk.

Anyway I know it is sad that I know this stuff and still eat meat. I just try to limit it, and definitely buy farm fresh eggs (barely spending less than a dollar to have a small say into how chickens are treated seems VERY reasonable to me). When I am not living in a group home I will for sure consider making the decision to do it. I already don't eat wheat, so that might be hard, but everything you decide to buy really is a vote into how the system is ran.

But I REALLY respect people who do decide to not support the way animals are treated in this country for their meat.

"Food Inc." is a great movie if you want to learn more specifics. It is good because it just touches on these things, but the whole movie is not about this. It tends to center around corn and the repercussions of the government paying farmers if they use corn. And it is VERY well done and I have never heard of someone that didn't like it. I have ended up showing it to like 10 people at various times, and I HATE watching movies more than once usually. hehe.

And animals feel. If a cat it kicked it is NOT happy. If a dog is trapped in a cage its entire life, that is a sad thing. It is not the same as a plant being trapped in a greenhouse. Just because something is "living" does not mean it is all under the same umbrella.

The brain need proteins which can be found in many foods like nuts, beans, whole grains. It doesn't have to have protein from a meat source.

Many vegetarians don't eat meat has nothing to do with animals rights, it's because abstaining from eating any meat is part of their healthy diet. All processed food has some health drawbacks, but meats are the worst offenders

It's guilt from the pain the animals feel. Plants surely feel pain as well but they don't exhibit it clearly, therefore leading to a cleaner conscience.

I was telling my roommate about this thread, and she wanted to see "Food Inc." so now I am watching it with her.

I guess there are 17 slaughterhouses in the US that basically give us all our beef.

One hamburger patties will have meat from thousands of cows.

Even if you don't eat at a fast food restaurant, because the way the system has developed BECAUSE of fast food restaurants, most of the meat for sale in grocery stores comes from the same place the meat does for Mcdonalds, etc.

Kosher meat, now that you mention it, is a bit more humane. It requires using a very sharp knife and a very specific method of slaughter to minimize the animals suffering. Do you really want to eat something that was completely freaked out when it died?
