Wolves Attack and Kill 19 Elk 85 miles from Yellowstone... What Are the Animals Sensing?
So a pack of wolves attacked a herd of elk killing 19 in what is being called a "surplus kill". My question is, what would fuel this frenzy? Animals have instincts that cause them to act out of the ordinary when they sense something is going on. Do they sense famine is coming? Earthquake? Disease? Volcanic eruption? Maybe something to do with warming and death? I don't know, but they surely sense that food will be in limited supply soon.

What do you think?

Sure. And why don't they kill large numbers of elk daily??? No, this is out of the ordinary. There is something causing them to act this way. Yellowstone is very unstable.

Hunger? and cubs to feed? Foxes and wolves will both make surplus kills in a feeding frenzy. KIlling instinct goes in to overdrive and they kill more than they could possibly use. Scientists really don't know what causes it. Maybe it's natures response to overpopulation.

I would say that this will be "weird event #1", if other "weird events" happen in the Yellowstone area over the next days or weeks, then I think there may be something stirring... with Yellowstone, it pays to pay attention to things that are out of the ordinary.

Re: Wolves Attack and Kill 19 Elk 85 miles from Yellowstone... What Are the Animals Sensing?
Wolves are absolute vermon. They slaughter for sport. They just eat the guts out of animals when they kill in mass. Even completely fed, they will still kill as many as they can. They have decimated the elk population here in northern Idaho after being wrongly introduced into an environment they were not native to by Bubba Clinton.

So to be clear, the wolves were not sensing anything happening in Yellowstone. They just fucking suck. They are the sand naggers of the animal kingdom.

This happens every spring, as the wolves are removing the fetus from these cows. They are leaving the rest of the carcus untouched.

Look, I hope you all are right, and you may very well be. We don't have wolves in the state that I live in, so I really don't know. The news did strike me as odd this morning though. If nothing else odd happens in the Yellowstone area over the next days or weeks, then yea, you are right...

Just bears watching though.

 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 71490374

"Like many other predators, wolves occasionally kill more than can be immediately eaten, sometimes resulting in the death of multiple prey animals. This uncommon behavior, known as “surplus killing,” has been documented in many predator species. Surplus killing by wolves is more likely to occur in late winter, when having a supply of food caches to return to is critical for survival. Nature is rarely wasteful, if ever. Whatever the wolves don’t eat first, is welcomed nourishment for countless other animals.
Something entirely different (and unnatural) happens when predators pursue domestic sheep. Not only do sheep lack natural defenses but their instincts often do not serve them well either. Instead of fleeing, as wild prey would do, sheep tend to run in circles. This chaos can trigger a prey response in predators that can result in multiple kills. In the Northern Rockies this behavior has been recorded with mountain lions, bears, coyotes, wolves, and domestic dogs. However, many of the incidents where multiple sheep have been killed have been the result of panicked sheep stampeding themselves."

From Living with Wolves---

It says it's uncommon behavior and I think I'd agree with people who study these animals...

Look, wolves were reintroduced in 1996. The elk are very aware of wolves behavior, as we are in several generations of elk living with them. In the beginning, the wolves fed on the calves as they were born, now they prefer them a little sooner. If you do not live here and see the behavior, please listen to those of us who do.
