Sometimes turning a computer on and off can cause boards to have problems due to heating and cooling over and over.

This to a minor degree is certainly true, but even more important is to open up the case once and a while and used some compressed air on the fans (especially the heatsink for the processor) and really get the dust out. A build up of dust will make your fans strain or just not spin fast enough and your air flow will turn to junk. Heat and dust is the enemy of all electronics.

i leave my computer on 24/7 its been mostly on since 2012 heavily used. It wont die on me it was custom built by trained experts, from Overclockers UK. And stress tested before they shipped it. If you get a PC custom made by any top brand you can pretty much guarantee it wont breakdown.

However if you built it yourself then good luck with that, chances are unless you're an experienced and knowledgeable computer builder, it will turn out unreliable.

The power surge of turning it on is the hardest on it, just like starting a cold engine where the oil is in the bottom and not lubricating anything for a second or two.

Thermal cycling has an effect on traces on boards etc, can cause tiny breaks from going from cold to hot.

It's essentially OK to just leave it on most of the time.

And like another said, dust that fucker every 6 months or so.

My work PC stays on for work stuffs and 24hr access by me. My home PC only comes on when I'm in front of it and goes off when I'm away from it. They can't attack something that isn't there most of the day.

Re: will computer last longer if shut off after use or always leave on ?
I shut mine off only if it updates and usually it does that on it's own. My old Protek desktop computer way back had all kinds of issues and the tech asked me if I turned it off and I sid yes, he told mee to leave it on nonstop so I did never had another issue until the kids started using it and turning it off and on. I then trashed it, and got a new one. My laptop now has gone a whole month plus on and not an issue. The longest I have left this one on is 3 months and shut it down and rebooted since it had been awhile.

I shut down every night.....

that way most of the chips on the mobo are 'refreshed'. but not all. even when completely off its still technically on. if your having strange/weird problems shut down and remove all power. we had a server that had to be unplugged almost every time before it would boot up.

keep in mind a 'restart' refreshes the OS only.....

I have always left my computers on 24/7. Once in awhile they will reboot for updates or I will reboot for whatever reason but other than that they're on 24/7 365 days a year. And they last forever, btw.

Leave it on. Go ahead and leave your car, the tv, the lights and the stove and burners as well.

I hear it is what all the cool kids are doing.

Re: will computer last longer if shut off after use or always leave on ?
Get an UPS (uninterruptible power supply). To kind of answer your question... I've seen more hardware die during startup after a reboot than just quit while the computer was on. However if you live somewhere where you get power outages or if you have storms that frequently give you "flickering lights" you need an UPS. The constant on and off again of a computer will kill it quicker than turning it off at night or keeping it on will.

also you will need to change the thermal paste every other year for the processor to be cooled properly. it does a big difference since it can dry out

I just had a new Acer laptop hardrive die. Lasted 2 months. Maybe they forgot the thermal paste when they assembled it. Cost me $20 to ship it back to Acer. Hopefully they get it back to me, soon.....
