What if...

Smartphones became disabled by an EMP or something. How would you know what time it was anymore?

It's so much more convenient for me to just glance at my watch when I want to know the time than it is to dig my phone out of my pocket and make the display come on. I would never not wear a watch.

Fuck it. I am going to buy me a wind up watch. I can never tell the time by the sun.

Done.

I actually still watch the sun to see the time of day.

I know when it's 11 am, 1pm and 6pm easily just by paying attention to the shadows the sun casts down. It's a lost art form but very much needed.

If something like that happens, where do you think you are going to have to be?
There will be two times, day and night.

Actually, if Apple would not have released the Apple Watch, I would not have gotten into traditional watches and I would not have started using them again. I restored my father's watch and I use it most days. Sometimes I use the Mickey Mouse watch my sister gave me.

Yes, it is more convenient to know the time by looking at the watch than taking the phone out of your pocket and waking it from sleep. But I use watches primarily as jewelry.

I watched a documentary about the invention of the first truly accurate pocket watch. The rotation is twice as fast as the solar system from your vantage point, and scary accurate. It was the missing ingredient for globe trotting navigation... proper time... somewhere else. And a modern look into what a piece of quartz can do, it all comes out fascinating.

John Harrison, total lone wolf inventor they tried to shaft.

found it.
