water retention...yes, I think most get some somewhere in the body during that time. Just make sure your circulation in the legs is not hampered by too much sitting, being too overweight or poorly fitting footwear.

what exactly causes the retention though?
usualyl during the period.. the estrogen is lower.. and thus supposedly the estrogen , like in the pill, cause the retention, so which is it? LOL

Don't know what causes the fluid retention, but it might help if you take extra vitamin C - it is a natural diuretic (rids the body of excess fluid). People who eat sufficient protein are also less likely to retain excess fluid.

Yeah most of us get it. I think it's just a mineral trace mineral deficiency. Could be anemia doing it too. Puts a strain on the body.

how swollen are you talking. like edema? is there any pain or discomfort? A little ofcourse is normal/ If you are on the heavy side you might want to take extra care. You could also use pamprin, it really helps and there are no side effects

I am not a woman; but I do get swollen eyes just prior to period!!

Rasberry tea and cranberry juice are excellent for premenstrual swelling. Warm baths and stretching help, as well.

If you have swollen ankles like that then you might want to go see a nephrologist. may be that nothing is wrong with your kidneys but, not many women get swollen ankles during their period. I sure didn't till my health-heart and kindeys- started going down hill.

I have PCOS. So when its getting close to that time, I get swollen ankles, swollen breasts & VERY bloated.

My cycles for the past 8+ years have been absolute nightmares.

I also am not a woman and my ankles don't swell, but occasionally my joint does!

you need to take amino acid supplements to clear up the swelling:
braggs liquid aminos are good (tastes like soy sauce)
