theoretically, the human body could adapt to any environment given enough time for it to evolve.

Mostly biochemical energies, which translate in our nerves into electrical and mechanical energy with thermal energy as a byproduct.

Surely our skin acts as a protective suit but it is not designed to withstand the vacuum of space.

But we're not living in "space". My "space suit" analogy is merely a suggestion. I'm more thinking of the suit you might wear on a particular planet, rather than in space.

So to jump ahead a bit, we could theorize that we are thrown onto (into?) this world to survive for some reason, perhaps undisclosed to us. We are born with our suits in order to survive here. We have no choice.

taking it further, the suits are expressly our only direct interface, perhaps it's a test to see how long we can keep our suits operational to measure our effectiveness as a control operative.

Since the body just what it looks like a meat suit, it wears out you are fine it still wears out because it is supposed to wear out.
