A sheriff’s deputy and a sergeant have been shot and the shooter is at large in Lancaster in the area of Antelope Valley College, which told people to shelter in place Wednesday afternoon.

The shooting occurred at 12:35 p.m. in the 3200 block of West Avenue J-7, according to Deputy Mike Barraza with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department’s Lancaster Station.

Preliminary information indicated a deputy was struck by gunfire and taken to a hospital in unknown condition, Barraza said.

He later said a sergeant and a deputy were both shot and that the two were not partners. They were both hospitalized, Barraza said.

The shooter is outstanding and no description of the person was available, Barraza said.

The circumstances that led to the shooting are not known. Barraza said there was a call for service that prompted authorities’ response, but he didn’t know what the call was about.

Los Angeles County Fire Department Inspector Richard Licon confirmed a gunshot-wound patient was transported to Antelope Valley Hospital. An “officer down” was reported by the Sheriff’s Department, Licon said.
