A cop said hello to me today as I walked in 7/11 (I'm black)
I was scared. I was shit scared. I'm not lying. He said it while not looking at me or paying attention to me. He was looking at what snacks to buy, I walked in the store (around 2:30 a.m. since I stayed up for the election results), and I literally froze. I froze so bad that I didn't even bother replying to him and saying hello back to him. Yes, the cop was white.

I was also wearing a black jacket. I quickly took my hands out of my pockets, made sure my hoodie was down, and I walked to the opposite side of him and went to the back of the store. I quickly got the items I need, got the cashier to check me up (she told me to wait so that the receipt could print out, I said hell no and that I don't want a receipt), and I quickly bolted to my car. While pulling out of 7/11, I made sure that my turning signals were on, and I that I slowly pulled out of the 25 m.p.h. zone.

I have never been this scared in my life so far. Luckily I made it out alive.

I'm white and would have had the same reaction. You have to dot your i's and cross your t's when the man is watching. This isn't a racial thing. This is a cop thing.
You should have waited on the receipt. You Never can tell and you want evidence.
I don't have the time or the crayons to explain this to you.

I promise you it did. I'm also as black as it gets. My skin color is a little bit darker than Obama's, but not dark as an Indian (Dinesh Desousa).

This did happen last night. I ordered the Oreo's cheese-its, and two chocolate bars. The white cop looked like a squeaky clean college linebacker, with a big rectangular head (like a younger peyton manning). Yes I was scared.

You can downrate my thread. I don't really care. This is how I felt, and I feel pressed to share it with you guys. I know that this situation would not gel with this community on GLP, but I still shared it. This is how every black folk out there feel, and this shows the disconnect that you white people and cops have with our community.

That's funny. I actually have a government job with benefits, and I work 11 hours a day, 5 days a week. Thank you very much, and have yourself a great day, whitey. You are obviously racist towards him, and I guess I will have to return the favor to you.

If my skin color and melatonin was a tad bit lighter, I know for a fact that I WOULD NOT be facing this problem.

Better to be safe than sorry. The cop might be walking out the door as my car pulled off. What if I forgot to put on my turning signals. After he pulls me over and starts to intimidate him, I might flinch. He might think that I'm reaching for something in my jacket.

Then boom.

People say hello all the time. I'm not an unsocial person (though I'm not outgoing). I don't mind people saying hello to me. My point was that I was nervous when this cop said hello to me. That was probably the first time in my life that a cop even talked to me. I have never been stopped for a ticket. I guess that none of you feel my pain. You're all freaking white and racist. Yes, what does the opinion of a black guy like me matter? And this, this exact reason, is why there is a disconnect between cops and the black community.

How is this a bait thread? Please explain. I am a real person, not a bot. I have feelings too. I have needs and wants. I have the need to be loved, to be respected, to be cherished. Yes, I know that I am not a statistic. It's because I quickly got out of the store after I paid for my snacks.

And this is my point. Do young black men like me have to live in fear like this?

Typical white response. And when I get my sorry ass shot because I was reaching in my glovebox for my registration (but the cop claim I was reaching in my pockets), none of you will shed a tear.

The white underlying racism, or shall I say, racism by not acknowledging, is very well percolating in this White America.

I will say that I would feel safer and more comfortable with a black cop. But they ain't around here, and I don't see much of them here.

But of course the black cop would try to suck up to the white cop masters and be an Uncle Tom. The black cop needs his promotion too.

And this is exactly my point. It starts with White America acknowledging the plight of young black men like me. It's a trickle-down effect. And I'm not sure that it will get better under Trump. My situation might get worse.

Just be respectful move along OP. As long as you treat them with respect they will most likely do the same. Most cops I know are decent people it's just that the few bad apples in their profession are amplified compared to people of other fields.

I'm genuinely sorry that you felt that fear.

But, this isn't unique to black people.

Ask any color of woman how she feels walking down a street at night. Or walking into a bar. Or a new office. Or a 7/11 at 2am on her own. etc

Ask the millions of people being stalked.

Ask all the disabled people who know that they're easy prey for any passing roach scum.

...you get my drift?
Every human knows the same fear you're describing.

Fear is how this godforsaken planet is run.
