Democrats who are having trouble getting out of the first stage of grief — denial — aren't being helped by the fact that, now that all the votes are counted, Hillary Clinton's lead in the popular vote has topped 2.8 million, giving her a 48% share of the vote compared with Trumps 46%.

To those unschooled in how the United States selects presidents, this seems totally unfair. But look more closely at the numbers and you see that Clinton's advantage all but disappears.

As we noted in this space earlier, while Clinton's overall margin looks large and impressive, it is due to Clinton's huge margin of victory in one state — California — where she got a whopping 4.3 million more votes than Trump.

California is the only state, in fact, where Clinton's margin of victory was bigger than President Obama's in 2012 — 61.5% vs. Obama's 60%.

But California is the exception that proves the true genius of the Electoral College — which was designed to prevent regional candidates from dominating national elections.

In recent years, California has been turning into what amounts to a one-party state. Between 2008 and 2016, the number of Californian's who registered as Democrats climbed by 1.1 million, while the number of registered Republicans dropped by almost 400,000.

What's more, many Republicans in the state had nobody to vote for in November.

There were two Democrats — and zero Republicans — running to replace Sen. Barbara Boxer. There were no Republicans on the ballot for House seats in nine of California's congressional districts.

At the state level, six districts had no Republicans running for the state senate, and 16 districts had no Republicans running for state assembly seats.

Plus, since Republicans knew Clinton was going to win the state — and its entire 55 electoral votes — casting a ballot for Trump was virtually meaningless, since no matter what her margin of victory, Clinton was getting all 55 votes.

The OP is right about this topic. If California leaves it means the end of the United States of America. China, Mexico and Russia will pile onto the Calexit movement and give it any support it needs. If they are successful and give military aid to California to prevent a military intervention (likely) it's likely other regions will try to succeed and will have massive external support from around the world. We may say good riddance to California now, but it will be the northeastern states next. Texas will probably leave to escape the economic and social chaos that will occur and then what will be left? We will be too fragmented and broken to fight the globalists. The world will reject our form of government and our beliefs. The world will march willingly into the NWO, forever haunted by what happened to us.

California will never be allowed to leave - EVER! These stupid libs can whine and cry like nasty teenagers all they want. It won't change a thing.

There is no way in hell the U.S. Government will give up the coast, ports, and huge military bases. There's also huge amounts of untapped natural resources they will never let go. How many millions of tons gold may be left in those mountains? If they let us have the water back, CA is capable of growing over half the country's food supply.

It wasn't considered legal to do so in 1861. The Supreme Court that year said so. I don't recall the case.

The point is, any State can secede regardless of the law if they want to.

Unless enforced by military action, nothing can stop the people of any State to leave the Union.

I do agree however that California does need to be split up. At least two States, three States would be perfect, IMO

Let them have those coastal counties from LA to San Francisco. Them fruitcakes, celebrities and all their illegals can live there. Trump can build his wall there instead. Most of the interior of Cali is R and conservative. It's the rat infested coastal cities that run the entire state. The US gets to keep the real Americans and all our National Parks, farmland, and some ports as we should.
