Couldn't it just be because Antarctica has suddenly become flavor of the year? It's a fad?

A few years back it was the Arctic. Before that it was the Amazon. Before that it was Alaska.

This year, they came early.

These glowing mass of clouds appear every year in late November or early December. But this year, the cold and cloudy apparition started covering the South Pole on November 17 which ties with the earliest start measured by the United States space agency NASA.

Noctilucent clouds, or NLCs, are still poorly understood as they are a relatively new phenomenon.

this year’s NLCs over South Pole came from space itself said Lina Tran from NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md.

NASA’s AIM mission, or the Aeronomy of Ice in the Mesosphere, studies these clouds to better understand the Earth’s mesosphere, the region of our planet’s atmosphere above the stratosphere and below the thermosphere. Thus, scientists can investigate the region’s connections to other parts of the Earth’s atmosphere, its climate and weather.
