Anonymous Coward User ID: 50032699 United States 12/08/2016 10:17 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | No. That is not Cascadia. This is the Mendocino Fracture Zone. Cascadia is north to south running and is a different portion of that area. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 73177346 This is true. It is on the San Andreas, the fault runs out into the ocean here. Some maps don't display it but it does. This is right at the end of the fault. It's pretty far south of the cascadia subduction zone. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 73177346 United States 12/08/2016 10:18 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | This was a likely scenario given the increased seismic activity in this area for the past few days. There have been several M4.0+ quakes in the past couple of days. Question now becomes whether this is still a harbinger to something bigger or if this is the mainshock. Again, this is NOT the Cascadia megathrust line. This is the Mendocino Fracture Zone. Yes, they are connected - but stop the fear mongering over the Cascadia zone until there is more substantial evidence that this was related. |

A jolt this big on that plate could set off the whole thing. [link to www.colorado.edu] "God forbid we should ever be 20 years without such a rebellion. The people cannot be all, & always, well informed... If they remain quiet under such misconceptions it is a lethargy, the forerunner of death to the public liberty... Let them take arms... So yes, something could trigger elsewhere - but the amount of "OMG CASCADIA" is unwarranted. Unfortunately, everyone here becomes seismic-tards when a quake goes off. Nobody can say with 100% certainty that it won't cause something bigger - but the likelyhood of a Cascadia megathrust event is pretty low on any given day. |

The preliminary data is just that - a computer generated prelim. mag. A person needs to verify and estimate the true magnitude with all the incoming data. I'm not saying that there isn't some tweeking going on, but not all of the changes are nefarious. I've seen many prelim. mags upgraded too. “Luck is what happens when preparation meets opportunity.” ~Seneca You can lead the Democrats to knowledge, but you can't make them think. |

This isn't the San Andreas and it sure doesn't take pressure OFF of the San Andreas. I think this increases the chances of a HUGE quake either in Cascadia or anywhere along the San Andreas in a big way. I've been feeling something coming here in So Cal for a long time. Actually, I kind of WANT it to happen and force some of these lefty libs from New York and back east OUT of my home state so they'll stop f'ing with our politics. |
