This is true according to George Bush who wrote in his memoir, "Decision Points", Bush wrote: "I never expected to see the remains of the fetus, which she ( his Mother Barbara Bush ) had saved in a jar to bring to the hospital.

My grandmother did that and buried it. I guess it was more of a miscarriage but she was still sad. Also, once while waterproofing a basement my crew dug up an old mason jar with what looked like fetus remains. I guess that's how people dealt with it back in the day.

Barbara Bush lost her first child at 3 years of age to leukemia. This little girl looked a lot like Barbara and it was when the little girl died that Barbara Bush's hair went gray "over night."

I think that when you are involved in murder, when bad things happen, you wonder if it is not karma or God or laws of nature (reckless abandonment has consequences), and for Barbara Bush, I think she may have thought her darling little girl was taken from her as a punishment.

It is my belief Barbara was in the crowd at the JFK assassination, dressed to blend in (tall big pretty smiling girl with fluffy short brown hair) along with baBUSHka lady (Laura, 19 who was in scarf and sunglasses) and Lady Bird Johnson, in the pink coat which she turned inside out when leaving the scene, has a guilty conscience. I think dates are the same and when they happen to come across a date which is significant, it can jar bad memories of malfeasance and regret (if not sociopathic), and ruin an average day a million times.

Here's something from the archive at The Washington Post. It says they did take it to the hospital. It doesn't say if there was a burial though. And it was the housekeeper that put it in a jar.

There's certainly some evil with the Bush family, but this isn't presented accurately here at all. I can guarantee if there was still a baby in a jar, they wouldn't have talked about it.

As to why a jar at all, I would imagine it's for medical reasons first. Then they could decide how to deal with fetus from there. Some people would opt for burial, some for other means.

I haven't had kids, but with horses, when a mare foals out, it's always strongly encouraged to keep the afterbirth, and keep it moist, for the vet to examine later. If it drys out, they can't examine it thoroughly.

They're making sure none of the afterbirth was retained. Also, if the foal is stillborn, did it just die, or has it been decaying for a bit. If there's some tissue left (or decay) in Utero it will cause a massive infection and death of the mare. The same would be true for humans, or any other creature. If that's the case, medical intervention is necessary to prevent death.
