I believe Satan usurped the date by committing a most heinous crime against humanity on that date, in order to associate it with DEATH and destruction, rather than happiness and the ushering in of a Savior for mankind.

As far as Jesus' actual birth date, I think we never could have figured it out without the modern technology to look backwards at 2,000 years of constellations in order to extrapolate back to the "Bethlehem Star."
