Surprise Storm
A high speed solar wind stream was responsible for a surprise moderate G2 geomagnetic storm very early this morning. Although a return to quieter levels is to be expected, sky watchers at higher latitudes should remain alert for visible aurora if it is still dark outside.

SOLAR WIND SPARKS GEOMAGNETIC ACTIVITY: Earth is entering a stream of high-speed solar wind on April 20th, and this is causing G1 to G2-class geomagnetic storms around the poles. NOAA forecasters say there is a 50% chance that these disturbances will continue until April 21st as our planet moves deeper into the stream.

Not necessarily, the CHS has energetic protons in it. If bz tips south we get greater effect. If shield stays up, the protons bypass us.
