What happened is the Turks were about to switch sides towards Russia, as they saw the US supporting the Kurdish YPG, they consider terrorists.
Erdogan openly stated that the US would have to decide between YPG or Turks.

So what happened behind the scenes is the US ditching the YPG for the more useful/greater Turkish army. Too bad for the Kurdish suckers, letting themselves being used as a proxy army of the US to invade Syria. Supposedly fighting ISIS is utter bullshit.
ISIS is their own creation. At best, you would see some fake attacks with maybe a few brainwashed suckers in the lower ranks falling but the main goal was to establish a defensible base within Syria for further actions later.

Assad shouldn't be happy at all about this, because now it will be the Turks instead of the YPG invading Syria. Well, it is better than both YPG and Turks invading Syria i guess.
