I work from home, or often in front of a computer. I am someone who is fascinated, and also can't deal with silence, so I usually have the scanner on at a minimum in the background. Solar activity greatly affects the reception and I am sure that "on quiet days" the solar activity simply does not allow for extensive communication by the military either. My grandfather was really into HAM and use to have a 35ft antenna on top of his garage/shop. He died in the early eighties, but I remember very clearly above his desk he had both a US and world map with hundreds of pins in it, where he had talked to people from all over!
